July 29, 2020: What Students Need to Know to Return to Campus

Faculty, staff and administration have spent all summer planning and developing safety protocols to prepare for your arrival. In addition to requiring masks on campus, numerous protocols have been developed across every area of campus to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Each classroom setting will be managed to allow for social distancing and will follow rigorous disinfecting procedures between every class. Student services and amenities ranging from ACES to Dining Services have been altered to allow for social distancing and/or alternative delivery methods. Face-to-face meetings or gatherings will be limited. Finally, the Student Wellness Center is prepared with testing and procedures to respond to COVID-19 as well as all other campus health needs. It will take all of us doing our part as a campus community to stay on campus this semester!

- Go to emporia.edu/return for all the information you need related to the return to campus this fall including student services info, policies, FAQs and past communications.

Before You Come to Campus
- Two weeks before coming to Emporia and to campus, stay close to home, avoid contact with other people, avoid situations that would increase your exposure to COVID-19.
- Do not come to campus if you are feeling ill, are awaiting COVID-19 test results, or have been identified as a “close contact” of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
- If you cannot come to campus, contact Dr. Shelly Gehrke (firstname.lastname@example.org), Assistant Provost for Enrollment Management and Academic Success for instructions on how to begin the semester.
- New Students — You must complete the Tuberculosis screening and submit your vaccination records, including proof you had the meningitis vaccine before you will be permitted to move in to the residence halls. Check your student email for a message from Lynn Hobson (email@example.com).
ESU Health + Safety Expectations
- Conduct Daily Self-Assessment checking for possible symptoms or fever. An electronic version can be found at emporia.edu/return > self-assessment.
- Wear face masks. Face masks are required at all times in all buildings on campus and outside when social distancing of 6 feet is not possible.
- Practice social distancing (keeping 6 feet between you and others) at every opportunity on and off campus.
If You Develop Symptoms
- Do not come to campus if you are ill or experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms. If you are living in the residence halls, do not leave your residence hall room.
- Contact the Student Wellness Center at 620-341-5222. To reduce risk of spreading to others, call first. Do not arrive before calling the Center.
- The Student Wellness Center will provide instructions to you. The typical procedure is:
- Assess need for COVID-19 test.
- If needed, tests will be conducted at the Student Wellness Center on campus.
- On-campus students will go home or move into temporary quarantine housing for 14 days.
- Off-campus students will self-quarantine at their permanent residence or in their Emporia residence for 14 days.
- Students contact SASS (SASS@emporia.edu) to request academic adjustments to transition to remote learning until they are able to return to class.
- Lyon County Health Department will conduct all contact tracing interviews and notifications. You should not attempt to conduct notifications on your own.
- Class delivery. As much as possible, classes will be delivered face-to-face. Many classes may take on a hybrid, or blended, approach, which would include a combination of face-to-face and online delivery. Some classes may transition to fully online. The choice of course delivery mode is based on the option that helps to best mitigate the spread of COVID-19 while also achieving the class learning objectives.
- Your Class Schedule.
- You will receive an email to your student email account from your faculty instructors prior to the start of the semester with specifics on how your course will be delivered. You can also find this information by checking the location on your schedule on or after August 3 at (hornet365.com> students > academic life > registration/enrollment).
- Classes marked with building and room number (i.e. Science Hall 123) in the location section will be face-to-face or hybrid/blended. Classes marked “campus wide” in the location section means the course will be delivered remotely/online.
- You should be prepared to meet at the times and days indicated unless informed otherwise.
- Canvas. All faculty will be using Canvas, a course management system this fall. All course information, syllabi, and course materials can be found in Canvas. Go to hornet365.com to access and explore Canvas. A Zoom training session will be offered in August, too. More details to come (watch your student email).
- Academic Adjustments. If you or someone you live with is at an elevated risk for COVID-19, you may request an Academic Adjustment. Request form located at hornet365.com > students > student form central > Request for COVID-19 Academic Adjustment. Check your student e-mail for more information.
- Order Your Books online at emporia.bncollege.com. Free shipping available through Aug. 7.

- Most departments are operating under alternative operating procedures but are still readily available to assist you! Check the website for the most current hours and methods for engagement (i.e. call for an appointment, set up a Zoom meeting, new hours or operations, etc). Take Care of Business
- Financial Aid. Contact the office of Financial Aid at 620-341-5457 with questions or to schedule a Zoom appointment.
- Bill Pay/Cashiers Office. All payments and account deposits will be made online this year. Go to hornet365.com > students > financial center > student account center > payment profile to set up electronic payment capability.
- Parking Permits. Available beginning Aug. 5 for off-campus students, and Aug. 10 for residence hall students.
- New Students! Hornet ID. Submit your photo to id-photo.emporia.edu to avoid long lines and delays during move-in. You’ll need your ID to move in to the residence halls.
