September 23, 2020: Semester Updates + Reminders

Message from ESU Fall Planning Group

September 23, 2020

Dear ESU Students, Faculty + Staff,

As we continue through the fall semester, we wanted to check in and provide updates and reminders.

First, please remember that we will have our biweekly Campus Community COVID-19 Q&A Forum tomorrow (Thursday, September 24) from 3 to 4 p.m. Register and submit questions about COVID-19 in advance at You can use the same form to submit questions during the event.

Returning to Classroom and Regular Activities After Quarantine/Isolation

Any person (student, faculty or staff) who has been told to isolate or quarantine because of COVID-19 is working with Public Health to monitor their case and determine when their isolation or quarantine is complete.

Generally release from isolation is after 10 days from symptom onset AND being free from fever for 72 consecutive hours without fever-reducing medication. Quarantine is 14 days from the last contact with a positive case. Please note: Release from isolation simply means a person isn’t considered contagious and is able to safely be around other people. It does not mean the person has fully recuperated from their illness and are able to resume their regular activity levels.

People completing isolation or quarantine may not have release documentation from Public Health, and they will not have negative test results, nor will they be retested as part of the release process. For these reasons, we recommend faculty and students, and supervisors and employees stay in close communication about their return.

COVID-19 Leave

Student employees fall under the same special COVID-19 circumstances that apply to all employees, including pay for missed work because of quarantine/isolation, living with a high-risk individual or caring for a dependent. These details for student employees are posted online.

Please note that COVID-19 leave is NOT available for any employee (student, faculty or staff) who chooses to self-quarantine without an order from public health or a healthcare provider.

Anyone with questions about the proper leave to use or whether they qualify for leave can ask Human Resources at

Thanksgiving Break + Beyond

A reminder that on-campus classes will end Friday, November 20. There will be no classes the week of November 23. Students who live in residence halls will receive direct communication from Residential Life about the fall move-out.

Campus buildings and offices will remain open for business Monday, November 23 through Wednesday, November 25. The entire campus is closed November 26 and 27. It reopens Monday, November 30.

Classes will resume remotely for their last week November 30 through December 4. Finals week, with finals delivered remotely, is December 7 through 11.

Thank you again, so much, for your adaptability throughout this semester. We know more questions will come up and encourage you to share them with us.

We hope you will join us for the ESU Campus Community COVID-19 Q&A Forum tomorrow.
