September 2, 2020: Temporary Suspension of Intercollegiate Athletics
Message from ESU President Allison Garrett
September 2, 2020
Dear ESU Students, Faculty + Staff,
Today, we temporarily suspended all intercollegiate athletic activities after finding a number of COVID-19 cases among student-athletes.
On Tuesday, Lyon County Public Health notified us it was investigating a suspected cluster of 5 positive cases connected to the baseball team. When additional cases were found through ESU’s random testing of all athletes, the decision to temporarily suspend activities was made out of an abundance of caution. As of 3 p.m. today, a total of 14 student-athletes out of over 400 across all teams had tested positive for COVID-19.
Under the Athletics suspension, academic meetings still will be allowed. We will continue our random testing program, and Kent Weiser and the team in Athletics will continue to evaluate the situation.
Because team activities only began on Monday, and Athletics is following strict protocols from the NCAA, we believe some of these cases came through social interactions. We also know from our own records that we have other cases of COVID-19 on campus that are not clustered and not connected to Athletics.
It is imperative that everyone connected to campus — students, faculty and staff — follow the guidance we already have provided. Wear face masks, practice social distance of at least 6 feet and good hygiene like washing hands.
