August 16, 2021: UPDATED Mask Requirements
Message from Future Planning Group
Aug. 16, 2021
Dear Hornet Nation:
Facemasks are now required in all Emporia campus buildings. This is a change to the last guidance given.
Several factors contributed to this change:
- The high transmissibility of the Delta variant of COVID.
- Increased cases in the Emporia + Lyon County area.
Masks may be removed when alone in your own self-contained office (not cubicle) or residence hall rooms (with roommates, but not outsiders).
Vaccinations continue to be critical to slow the spread of COVID-19.
- People who are vaccinated and contract the Delta variant (called “breakthrough” cases), have fewer hospitalizations and recover quicker than people who are not vaccinated.
- Booster shots have been approved, and are available for, immunocompromised patients — see booster shot guidance.pdf for additional information and details.
Being vaccinated also means less disruption to your daily routine if you are exposed to COVID. Unvaccinated people who are exposed to COVID must quarantine for 14 days, which means staying home and avoiding contact with others. No classes, no practices, no work. Vaccinated people do not need to quarantine unless they develop symptoms.
Like you, we’re excited about being together for the activities that make campus so exciting, whether it’s athletic events, club activities or just hanging out together. As we launch the fall 2021 semester, let’s work together to protect each other for the common good.
Sincerely,
Future Planning Group
