Biographical/Historical note

John Joseph Zimmerman was born July 3, 1917, at Emporia, Kansas, to Anthony Adam and Kathryn Ann Hogan Zimmerman. His association with the college began in 1922 when a member of the kindergarten laboratory school. As a college student he was a member of the Phi Delta Chi fraternity, Y.M.C.A., History and Government Club, a member of the track team and of the K Club. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1939 and a Master of Science in education degree in 1941. John also earned a Master of Arts in history and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He taught at Roosevelt High School and public schools in Caney and Bonner Springs, Kansas, and Colorado Springs, Colorado, before teaching at the university. John was a member of the Department of Social Sciences from 1954 until 1982, and University Historian from 1981 until his death on December 16, 1983.

John served as Faculty President of Emporia State University, as an officer in the Alumni Association, was named a Xi Phi outstanding teacher, and received a Distinguished Alumni Award. He was also awarded a Penrose Summer Research Grant from the American Philosophical Society in 1960. He was a life member of the Kansas Historical Society, the Organization of American Historians, Kappa Delta Pi, and Pi Gamma Mu, in which he also served as chancellor of the mid-western region. He also served in several officer positions for the Kansas History Teachers Association. Other memberships included the Emporia Noon Lions Club, the Lyon County Historical Society, Outlook Club, Phi Delta Chi fraternity, and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. John was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Medical Services Corp, and during the Korean War as a detachment commander in Yokohama, Japan. John married Gwendolyn Smith on June 5, 1941; they were the parents of two daughters.

Scope and Contents note

This collection consists primarily of the papers of Dr. John J. Zimmerman although some items were collected for the Archives by Gwendolyn Zimmerman. The bulk is miscellaneous papers and letters relating to the Department of Social Sciences, including letters from administration and faculty members, written policies, and items relating to work on various committees. Research material and papers consist of student theses, research notes, and manuscripts. Much of Dr. Zimmerman’s personal research seems to be related to Revolutionary War patriots; resources for Benjamin Franklin, Joseph Galloway, Charles Thomson, and James Pemberton are included. Dr. Zimmerman helped establish a summer institute for secondary history teachers and paperwork relating to that annual event as well as meetings of the Kansas History Teachers Association are included. Significant national events from the sixties, such as the death of President John F. Kennedy and civil defense concerns, are also represented in the files. A number of newspaper articles reflect campus issues, including troubles during Dr. Visser’s administration and the name change from Kansas State Teachers College to Emporia State University.
