Grace May Enfield

Grace May Enfield was born in 1877 to William V. and Elizabeth J. Enfield of Lincoln, Kansas. She attended Kansas State Normal School and graduated in 1900 with a degree in Latin. She also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western State Normal in Hays, Kansas, and attended Kansas State College in Manhattan. She married Thomas Marshall Wood, who earned degrees from Kansas State Teachers College in 1895 and 1898. They lived in several cities in Kansas before moving to Kentucky around 1935. According to the Alumni News, in 1944 Grace was teaching at Pittman Center School in Sevierville, Tenneseee, and in 1947 was living at the Caney Creek Community Center in Pippapass, Kentucky. Grace and Thomas are buried in the White City Cemetery, Morris County, Kansas.

Thomas Marshall Wood

Thomas Marshall Wood was born in 1870. He attended Kansas State Normal School in Emporia, Kansas, and graduated with an Academic degree in 1895 and a Latin degree in 1898. He also attended Kansas State College and Stout Institute. Thomas taught at Fort Hays Kansas State College and then worked in banking in Kansas. He and his wife, Grace May Enfield, moved to Vest, Kentucky around 1935. Thomas died in Akron, Ohio, on November 12, 1943. He and Grace are buried in the White City Cemetery, Morris County, Kansas.

Scope and Contents note

This collection consists of one grade book and two applications for admission to the Kansas State Normal School. The 16-page grade book belonged to Grace May Enfield and appears to have been issued by Kansas State Normal School. It includes a brief explanation of the courses of study, room to record four years' of grades, and memorandum pages. The subjects are pre-printed, while grade percentages, dates, and teacher signatures and initials have been added. The book includes information from November 1896-June 1900. The applications for admission were presented for Grace Enfield Wood and Thomas M. Wood. Both are dated 1904 and contain information about previous college experience including degrees earned and courses completed. The transcript information is attested to by Maude E. Mackenzie, Registrar.
