Scope and Contents note

The collection consists of one copy of the event program for the second reunion of the Upper Room Bible Class held on May 28, 1961, and a letter from Judge Walter A. Huxman to James W. Putnam on May 31, 1961, indicating that Huxman was enclosing the program which was signed by the major dignitaries of the reunion event.

The event program is in a 16-page booklet format. The front cover page indicates the event included members of the original Upper Room Bible Class plus recipients of the Thomas M. Iden Scholarship and recipients of the Iden Upper Room Scholarship. The cover page of the program has handwritten inscriptions and signatures from three dignitaries who participated in the reunion: John E. King, President of Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia, Hugo T. Wedell, former Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court, and Walter A. Huxman, former Governor of Kansas. The second page of the program lists the event schedule. The next three pages contain photographs and biographical sketches of Iden, Huxman, and Wedell, and explain that Huxman and Wedell had both been members of the Upper Room Bible Class. The next seven pages contain a brief explanation of the history of the Thomas M. Iden Scholarship and biographical sketches of each of the scholarship winners from 1935 to 1961. The next page contains a photograph of James W. Putnam and a description of his activities establishing the Iden Upper Room Scholarship and a list of scholarship recipients from 1955 to 1961. The next page has a letter of thanks from the “Local Committee” of Singular, Trusler, and Putnam to people who assisted in administering the scholarships and in arranging the reunion. The last two pages forming the back cover of the program booklet are blank.

The letter from Huxman to Putnam is one page, and it indicates that Huxman sent the autographed copy of the program to Putnam on May 31, 1961.
