Biographical/Historical note

A program for the education of librarians was established in 1902 at Kansas State Normal School, was named the Department of Library Science in 1905, and then changed to the Department of Librarianship in 1966 and later to the School of Library Science in 1975. This was the first library program west of the Mississippi River and has been offered at this school continuously with the exception of three years following World War I.

The objectives of this program included providing basic professional librarianship education, specialized education in particular areas of librarianship, opportunities for continuing librarianship education, and cooperation with others to strengthen library services.

In 1960 the Department of Library Management welcomed its first graduate students who were awarded Master of Science degrees in librarianship, and in 1964 the overall number of graduate students almost doubled compared with 84 students in 1962. In 1966 the Department of Librarianship, which offered both undergraduate and graduate programs, was accredited by the American Library Association. The undergraduate program included the courses Introduction to Librarianship, School Library Service, Storytelling, and Children’s Literature, and the graduate program included Public Libraries, School Libraries, Government Publications, and Problems in Cataloging. The financial aid offered included library science assistantships, library science scholarships, graduate fellowships, graduate assistantships, and student loans.

The School of Library Science changed its name to School of Library and Information Management in 1983 and now offers an Information Resource Studies bachelor degree, Master of Library Science degree, and Doctorate of Philosophy in Information and Management.
