Biographical/Historical note

Rose Marie Steinweden, the daughter of Christopher William and Nell Boyle Steinweiden, was born on February 20, 1919, in Atchison County, Kansas. She was an undergraduate student at Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia from 1937 to 1940 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Music degree. While in school, she participated in Physical Education Club, Sigma Pi Sigma, Symphonic Chorus, Women’s Glee Club, Alice Freeman Palmer, and Young Women’s Christian Association and was the Sigma Sigma Sigma Song Chairman and the Rhythmic Circle Secretary-Treasurer. She served as director of music for the United Service Organizations, National Catholic Community Service, in San Diego and taught preschool classes at the Young Women’s Christian Association in Atchison after graduation. She was a member of the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary, Farm Bureau, Atchison County Cooperative, American Association of University Women, and a life member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Atchison. She married Clarence Valentine “Bill” Haegelin on November 3, 1945 in Atchison, Kansas and died on October 6, 2001.

Scope and Contents note

This collection contains miscellaneous programs and information about Rose Marie Steinweden as a student in the School of Music at Kansas State Teachers College between 1937 and 1940. It includes a notebook for 1937, programs for a student recital and an annual Music Department Clinic and Conference held in 1938, a college directory for 1938/1939, and programs for a dance recital and a performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah in 1940. Also included are 3 class registration cards for Rose Marie Steinweden from 1937 to 1939, a  Sigma Sigma Sigma Pledge Manual and a  Social Precedents and Sorority Ethics manual for 1938. A flyer advertising a performance by the Eva Jessye Choir, a Fall Concert Band Roster, and a mascot sticker can also be found in this collection.
