Ewing, Clara Virginia

Clara Virginia Ewing was born in Emporia, Kansas, around 1885. She graduated from Kansas State Normal School, earned her Elementary Education degree in 1902 and Latin in 1903, and then taught at Atoka and later in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and later became a resident there. On November 19, 1908, she married Obed Clinton Cloninger in Tulsa and then had their children William Clinton Cloninger and Georgiana Cloninger, and lived there for more than 6 years before they moved to San Diego, California, on January 10, 1915 for their health. But because of her illness, she died there only 3 months after their move, and then was buried in the Rose Hill Memorial Park in Tulsa.

Scope and Contents note

The book Kansas Sporophytes Theme by Clara Virginia Ewing mainly talks about the diversity and evolution in the plant life. Sporophytes is defined as the spore-producing phase in the life cycle of a plant that shows alternation of generations. The author first discusses the differences and resemblances of low plant and animals by comparing Myxomycetes, Flagellata, Pandorina, and Volvox with both the plant and animal characteristics. And then she talks about three groups of plant life – Thallophytes, Bryophytes, and Pteridophytes, and their respective characteristics by analyzing their structures and forms. Pictures with the names of some plants and a brief summary of each of the three groups of plant life are also included in this book.
