Mary Jane Watson

Mary Jane Watson was born in 1829 at Quakertown, Pennsylvania. She began teaching in Ohio at the age of 16 and moved with her parents in 1858 to Emporia, Kansas, where she served as schoolteacher for the town's first established school. In 1867 she and Ellen Plumb became the first graduating class of The State Normal School of Kansas. Her association with the school continued as she taught Mathematics and Geography classes there from 1867-1868 and 1870-1872. She continued to teach in area schools until 1887. That year she married Dr. R. T. Short of Trenton, Missouri. He died in 1892, and she suffered strokes in 1898 and 1900. Mary Jane Watson Short died on December 7, 1908 at the age of 79. She is interred at Maplewood Cemetery, Emporia, Kansas.
