Ora Everett Rich

Ora Everett Rich was born in Mound City, Kansas, on September 22, 1900. He came to Emporia in 1920, where he enrolled at Kansas Normal School and was employed in the Normal Print Shop. He was later made manager of the Print Shop and a member of the College Publicity Committee. He also edited the Bulletin, the student weekly newspaper.

Rich graduated in 1924 and stayed at Kansas Normal School as a member of the faculty. He married Lillian L. Sexton on March 7, 1924, at Valley Center, Kansas. In 1931 he began attending the University of Kansas where he received his Master of Arts degree. He returned to Kansas State Teachers College and began teaching in the English Department. He had close ties with the Print Shop and the Publicity Department, and at various times he was the temporary publicity director. He received the Doctor of Philosophy degree from Western Reserve University in 1940, where he was a member of the faculty for three semesters. In 1945, he was appointed Head of the English Department at Kansas State Teachers College.

Rich founded, edited, wrote, and sponsored many college publications. He was chairman of the editorial committee that reactivated the graduate quarterly following World War II as Emporia State Research Studies. His contributions to professional magazines and newspapers are many. His feature, “Stories from the Book Shelf,” appeared in the Kansas City Star every other week for seven years. He is also the author of two books, William Allen White, the Man from Emporia, and The Heritage of Kansas.

Rich was instrumental in establishing the William Allen White Children’s Book Award. He also started the Kansas Master Teacher Awards and founded the Emporia State College Endowment Association. He was a trustee of the Emporia State College Endowment Association, a trustee of the William Allen White Foundation at the University of Kansas, and an honorary life member of the Kansas Association of Teachers of English. He was also president of the Kansas College Teachers of English and a member of the National Education Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, The American College Publicity Association, and the American Alumni Association. In 1964 he helped organize the Kansas Kiwanis Foundation.

Rich was the recipient of an outstanding teachers award at Emporia State University, a Distinguished Alumni Award, and was included in the first edition of "Who's Who in the Midwest."

Everett Rich died March 8, 1985, in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. He is buried in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Emporia, Kansas
