Scope and Contents note

The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin by James Parton was given as a prize at the 1890 Kansas State Normal School Debate Competition. The competitions started informally but were given permanent regulations in 1881 by the faculty. The prize competitions were in declamation, essay, oration and debate. The debate competitions were held exclusively between two of the Kansas State Normal School literary societies each year; the Literati, the Lyceum, and Belles-Lettres started in the 1887-1888 school year, and the Philomathian was included beginning in the 1891-1892 school year. Each society would select two students to be their representatives in the competition. The prizes were not disclosed before the competition but normally consisted of a rare book or an example of fine literature.
