Wilbern Walpole Parker

Wilbern Walpole Parker was born in Iowa Point, Kansas, February 17, 1878, to Thomas & Clara Huitt Parker. The family moved to Emporia in 1896. Wilbern attended Kansas State Normal School and was a member of the football team. He earned a degree from the Academic Department in 1902. Following college Wilbern taught school and coached athletics before attending law school at Kansas University from 1903-1906. He returned to Emporia and joined the law offices of J. Harvey Frith and Lyman B. Kellogg.

Wilbern was an active member of the Lyon County Republican Central Committee and served as judge in police, probate, and juvenile courts. He was also elected to the state Senate, representing District 24 from 1925-1929. Wilbern was a member of the Jesters, the Scottish Rite, the Arab Shrine, Foreign Study Club, Lyons Club, Lyon County Bar Association, and the First Methodist Church.

He married Emma Floy Shumacher on October 12, 1913. Floy began a career in music when she was 16 years old and taught at Kansas State Normal School from 1909-1913. They were the parents of two sons. Wilbern suffered a fatal heart attack on February 24, 1961. Floy passed away June 25, 1974.

Scope and Contents note

This collection consists of a diploma issued to Wilbern Parker from the Kansas State Normal School. He earned a degree from the Academic Department in 1902. Remnants of a ribbon are attached to the diploma which also features the State Normal School seal. It is signed by members of the Board of Regents and the President and Secretary of the Faculty.

Obituaries for W. W. and Floy Parker are available via microfilm copy of the Emporia Gazette. Wilbern is pictured in the 1901  Then-A-Days yearbook as a member of the football team. A senior quote and individual photo are printed in the 1902 yearbook, volumes 1 and 2 respectively. Other examples of diplomas exist in the Emporia State University Archives.
