Abstract
This collection primarily consists of programs for musical performances held at Kansas State Teachers College, at Emporia city schools, and as part of the Emporia Entertainment Series. Other items include a laundry mailing label, Sigma Alpha Iota yearbook, and artifacts representing Tau Kappa Epsilon, Alpha Sigma Alpha, and Sigma Tau Gamma.

Biographical/Historical note

Patricia Joan Swiercinsky attended Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia, Kansas, from 1953-1956. She earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree in May 1956. While a student she was a member of many organizations, including Alpha Sigma Alpha in which Patricia served as President during her senior year, Inter-Faith Council, Christian Student Fellowship, Kappa Delta Pi, Panhellenic Council, Home Economics Club, and Xi Phi. Her musical interests were expressed by membership in the Treble Clef Club, Orchestra, Band, Symphonic Choir, and the women’s honorary music society Sigma Alpha Iota in which she served as Vice-President during her senior year of college. Patricia married Clyde Miller, a musician and educator. He retired from the University of North Texas in 1983.

Scope and Contents note

This collection represents the activities and interests of Patricia J. Swiercinsky Miller while a student at Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia. Most items are programs from various performances held in the community or at the college. Community items include the Emporia Entertainment Series, Lowther Junior High School, and Emporia High School. College performances include Singing Bees, faculty recitals, Curli-Q, Symphonic Band, Symphonic Choir, E-State Men’s Chorale, and the opera workshops sponsored by the Emporia State Players. Programs for the May 8, 1956 performance by the Symphonic Band are autographed by featured artist and world-famous trumpeter Rafael Mendez. The collection also contains programs for other Music Department-sponsored performances. Artifacts include laundry labels used when sending clothes home on the weekends, a freshman beanie cap, 4 mugs representing Tau Kappa Epsilon activities such as the Red Carnation Ball and a Bowery Party, ash tray and signed pledge board representing Alpha Sigma Alpha, and 2 wooden pledge paddles and a compact representing Sigma Tau Gamma.
