Biographical/Historical note

Hattie Horner was born in Illinois and spent most of her childhood in Whitewater, Kansas. While attending Kansas State Normal School she was on the Board of Directors for Normal Publishing Company. The company published a monthly journal, “The Normal Cabinet.” She graduated in 1883 from Kansas State Normal School in Emporia, Kansas. After graduating, Hattie was principal of Arkansas City High School in Arkansas City, Kansas, from 1884 to 1885. She published her first book of poetry in 1885. Hattie then went on to become assistant principal at El Dorado High School in El Dorado, Kansas, in 1886. In 1888 she published her first prose titled Not at Home. Hattie quit her job as assistant principal in 1891 and devoted all her time to writing. Hattie compiled,  Collection of Kansas Poetry for the   Topeka Saturday Evening Lance. She moved to Chicago, Illinois and worked for the  Era, the  Home World, and the  Christian Oracle. In 1893, Hattie married Overton Earl Louthan. She wrote and published a poem-romance book,  Ila. Hattie and Overton left Chicago and relocated to Denver, Colorado, in 1896 because of Overton’s poor health. In Denver, she worked as associate editor of the  Great West. She returned to Chicago for a short period in 1898 to work as a teacher and writer, then she returned to Denver to continue writing short stories. Overton died in 1906 and was buried in Butler County, Kansas, at Brainerd Cemetery. Hattie Horner Louthan died in 1950 and was buried next to her husband in Kansas.

Scope and Contents note

The collection consists of two books written by Hattie Horner Louthan and one collection of poetry compiled by Hattie Horner Louthan. The first book, Not at Home was published in 1889 under her maiden name, Hattie Horner. A Kellogg Library sticker is located on the inside front cover of the book. The first page is inscribed “To the Kansas State Normal School, Compliments of the Author.” The title page is marked “Library, Kansas State Normal School, Emporia.” There is a pocket attached to the inside back cover containing two check out cards which were removed from the pocket and moved to file folders. The second book,  Thoughts Adrift, was published in 1902. The inside front cover of the book has a Kellogg Library sticker. The first page is inscribed “To the Kansas State Normal School, Compliments of the Author.” The title page is marked “Library, Kansas State Normal School, Emporia.”  Collection of Kansas Poetry was published in 1891. There are two Dewey Decimal labels located on the outside cover of the book. The inside front cover has a William Allen White Library sticker. The title page indicated that the book was purchased for fifty cents at Marsh’s Bookstore. William Allen White is listed in the table of contents as a contributing poet. The back inside cover has a pocket attached that contained a check out card which was removed to a file folder.
