Biographical/Historical note

The first meeting of the Faculty Wives Club was held on October 6, 1914, in Emporia, Kansas, at the home of Frank and Elizabeth Agrelius. A second organizational meeting was held on November 2, 1914, at which Mrytle D. Braucher was elected the first president of the Faculty Wives Club and it was decided that meetings would be held in members’ homes every second and fourth Monday of the month. Beginning in 1918, meetings were only held on the fourth Monday of the month.

The club was organized to be a social group for the wives of Kansas State Normal School faculty. Membership was open to wives of present and former full-time faculty, administrators, and men with full-time administrative positions. The club kept dues low in order to encourage all wives to participate. In the early 1930s, as a result of increased membership, meetings were held on the Kansas State Teachers College campus, usually in the student union. Sheets listing officers were handed out by monthly hostesses until 1961 when they were replaced with a formal yearbook that eventually included a directory. The organization changed its name to University Women of Emporia State University in November of 1987 in order to open up membership to all woman associated with Emporia State University either through their own or their husband’s unclassified position. The organization is believed to have disbanded sometime around 2000.

The Faculty Wives Club formed two major interest groups in the 1930s. The first was the bridge club which met once a month. The second interest group was the mother’s club which was created for mothers who were unable to make the afternoon Faculty Wives Club meetings; this club was open to all members. In 1963, the mother’s club’s name was changed to coffee and conversation group to reflect the group’s activities. Many other smaller interest groups were formed including a reading group, a cookery group, a couple’s gourmet group, a crafts group, and a knitting and needlework group.

The Faculty Wives Club decided to have more social gatherings that included their husbands in 1939 and they began having an annual Valentine’s dinner and dance. In 1948 they began having an annual progressive dinner. The next year they held the first annual Spring Dinner followed by the group attending a school play. In addition to these annual social activities the Faculty Wives Club also held many other dinner and dance events and teas throughout the year.

The Faculty Wives Club devoted a great deal of time to the community. During World War I they helped make bandages for the Red Cross. During World War II they first devoted one regular and two special meeting to sew for the Red Cross but eventually began sewing every Thursday. The Faculty Wives Club provided volunteers to assist in the Emporia, Kansas, polio immunization in 1962 and 1963.

The Faculty Wives Club made contributions to many organizations on and off campus. They contributed to Britain’s Children’s Fund, the War Fund, and Christmas Gift Bags for Winter General Hospital. They sponsored a cake walk during the Student War Fund Rally and a tea for cadet wives during World War I. They put on a play in 1924 titled Prince Charmin from which all the proceeds were used to buy war bonds. They also made contributions to the Student Loan Fund. In 1956 the first Faculty Wives Scholarship was awarded. The scholarship was awarded annually to a female full-time undergraduate student attending Emporia State University. The student awarded the scholarship was chosen based on her scholastic record; financial need was also a consideration. The Faculty Wives Club compiled a cookbook titled Faculty Wives’ Receipts in 1960 and another in 1960/1961 titled Not a Slimmer Primer. In 1969 the  Faculty Wives Club opened a thrift store which remained in business until 1976. The proceeds from the thrift store were donated to the university’s Endowment Association where the money was used to match National Defense Student Loans Funds.
