Biographical/Historical note

Emporia State University Debate Program

The history of debate activities at Emporia State University began a few years after the college was created. Kansas State Normal School opened in 1863 and debate activities began on campus around 1874. These early debates took the form of competitions between campus literary societies such as the Lyceum Society. All debate activities during the early years of the school were completely extracurricular. Debate at Kansas State Normal School, as well as other institutions, was slowly becoming better organized at the intercollegiate competition level during this time period. Another step forward came on May 8, 1896, with the creation of the Interstate Oratorical League of Normal Schools. Even though intercollegiate competitions were taking place, debate at Kansas State Normal School remained an extracurricular activity until 1937.

An important literary society during the early years on campus was the Alpha Senate. The Alpha Senate was organized in 1887 and the main interest of this group involved debate and work in parliamentary law. This society quickly became the most important debate society on campus. The Alpha Senate can be credited with setting up the first inter-state debate competition on the Kansas State Normal School campus. This competition took place during the spring of 1900 and featured open competition between debaters from Kansas State Normal School and Nebraska State Normal School.

One of the early debate coaches for the college was Franklin L. Gilson, who was head coach during the 1913/1914 academic year. After Gilson, the Kansas State Normal School witnessed four more debate coaches between 1915 and 1920 as the debate program was headed by Harrison Karr, W. E. Myers, J. H. Lawrence, and Earl Shoup.

The year 1917 was very important for the Kansas State Normal School debate program. In April the debate program was accepted into Pi Kappa Delta, the national honorary forensics fraternity. 1917 also featured the debut of women debaters on the squad. Fifteen women competed for the three spots open on the women’s intercollegiate team. Women’s debate was recognized and honored in March 1921 when it was accepted into Zeta Kappa Psi, the women’s honorary forensic society. Eight Kansas State Normal School women debaters were initiated as charter members that year. In 1923 the School’s name changed to Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia; 1923 also featured the expansion of competition for women’s intercollegiate debate for the college. When the Women’s Pentagon Debating League was formed this league featured women debate teams from Baker University, Ottawa University, Washburn University, Kansas State Agricultural College, and Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia. With the formation of this league the women’s debate team was assured four debates each year.

In 1920 Vincent A. Davis took over head coaching responsibilities for the debate team; he remained head coach until 1923. In the fall of 1923 F. W. Lambertson became head coach. Dr. George R. R. Pflaum became head coach in 1924 and except for the 1930/1931 academic year, remained head coach until 1949. Pflaum made many changes in the debate program and was very successful in doing so. He shifted the emphasis in debate from a memorized oratorical style of delivery to a pure extemporaneous style of speech and in 1927 launched an extensive intramural forensics program on campus. These competitions were open to any organization on campus and during the first year 40 people representing 18 campus groups were involved in the intramural forensics program. This program focused on increasing interest in forensics on campus and was also a good method of finding hidden talent. Intramural forensics for campus organizations continued until 1935.

Pflaum’s outstanding work in the area of debate was recognized in 1929 with his election as National President of Pi Kappa Delta. Shortly after this, during the 1930/1931 season, Pflaum took a short one year leave as head debate coach but quickly took back up the reins in the fall of 1931. During his one year leave the debate team was coached by James Lowther.

During the 1940s the debate program saw its scope severely curtailed. A big reason for this was due to the loss of many male debaters who were serving in World War II. Those who remained on campus also were involved in World War II by advancing the war effort on the home front. One activity which showed this war effort on the home front came in 1943 when the Kansas State Teachers College chapter of Pi Kappa Delta staged a drive to sell war bonds on campus and in the Emporia community.

Dr. Pflaum resigned as head debate coach in 1949 and was replaced by Charles Masten. Masten remained at this position until 1954, and during his time as coach Kansas State Teachers College featured some of its best debate squads. During the 1950/1951 season the debate team was led by students Robert Howard and Robert Kaiser. This duo boasted a ninety percent win record and received an invitation to the exclusive West Point Invitational Tournament at West Point, New York, where they earned a second place finish.

In 1954 Howard Holladay became head coach and remained at this position until 1957. During his tenure the debate program began publication of The Rebuttal Box, a monthly newspaper published for the benefit of high school debaters. It contained important debate articles, tournament reports, and other material of interest to debaters. Publication of  The Rebuttal Box continued until April 1957 when it was canceled because of lack of funds to hire a student editor.

During the late 1950s and 1960s the debate team continued to be very competitive in intercollegiate debate. At this time the debate program was headed by Jim Trent (1957-1960), John C. DeBross (1960-1963), Larry Larmer (1963-1966), and John Lehman (1966-1969). During the 1960/1961 season, under the guidance of head coach John C. DeBross, the Kansas State Teachers College duo of Gary Sherrer and Harold Lawson earned the college’s first National Championship debate trophy.

In 1969 Marvin Cox took over as coach and continued to lead the program until 1976. David Matheny became coach and remained in that capacity until 1983. After the departure of Matheny the program witnessed two short tenure coaches back to back. Matheny was replaced by his assistant, Candy Clark. Clark’s role as head coach was brief, lasting for only the 1983/1984 academic year. Clark was replaced by Steve DePoe, who headed the debate program from 1984 to 1986. In 1986 Glenn Strickland was hired as head coach and remained so until 2002. During the Strickland years the Emporia State University debate program was very successful and won numerous top level awards. This success was highlighted by performances between the years 1990 and 1993. During the 1990/1991 academic year, debaters Jim Haefele and Terrance Morris won the National Junior Division Debate Title at the CEDA junior division tournament. This success continued on into the 1991/1992 academic year when Haefele was named the top debater in the country. During the 1992/1993 academic year the Emporia State University debate team captured the year-long CEDA National Championship. Glen Strickland was director of debate for 16 years before relinquishing control in 2002.

With the departure of Glen Strickland in 2002 the university named his assistant Kenneth DeLaughder as director of debate. Under DeLaughder’s guidance the debate team continued on with its success. In 2003 Emporia State University debate won a Junior Varsity National Championship, and DeLaughder was honored by being named Coach of the Year for the Rocky Mountain district.

The National Debate Tournament is sponsored by the American Forensic Association with support from the Ford Motor Company Fund.

In the late 1980s the tournament was moved to St. Louis University and then finally to Southern Illinois University. The tournament lasted until 1999. In 2003 Gonzaga University brought the tournament back, but it is no longer a round robin style tournament.

North Texas State University Tournament The North Texas State University debate tournament is named in recognition of William Robert DeMougeot. As debate coach she guided the college’s team to the National Debate Tournament and she was the first female president of Pi Kappa Delta honorary forensics fraternity. George B. Bowman retired as debate coach at William Jewell in the 1970s but still taught a few classes on campus until the 1990s.

Xavier Marx National Invitational Debate Tournament

The Xavier Marx National Invitational Debate Tournament began in April of 1956. It was held annually and sponsored by Robert S.
