Collection consists of interviews and research material relating to Ray Call’s research on the history of Emporia State University. Collection materials consist of papers, notes, newspaper articles, audiocassette tapes, and computer disks.

Biographical/Historical note

Ray Call joined the staff of the Emporia Gazette as a part-time photographer in 1955, while attending Emporia State University. In 1957, he became a full-time employee of the  Emporia Gazette and worked there as a reporter, wire editor, and managing editor, before retiring in 1996. As a member of Emporia’s St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Call was a former member of the vestry, senior warden, and delegate. He served as a member of two search committees at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, and was chairman of its bicentennial celebration in 1976. He is the author of  Emporia’s Ascent: How the Town Grew and Life Changed from 1950 to 2000 (ISBN: 0974068128), self-published in 2005.

Scope and Contents note

The collection consists of research material, gathered by Ray Call as part of his two year contract to President Robert E. Glennen of Emporia State University, to research and write a history of Emporia State University. The collection consists of 4 boxes containing folders with printed and audio material describing different aspects of and interviews with people associated with Emporia State University, as well as its previous names, Kansas State Normal School and Kansas State Teachers College. Many folders contain research papers prepared by students and faculty members on various Emporia State University subjects. Additional resource materials were placed in existing collections, and are identified in Related Materials. Materials include newspaper articles and photographs of campus buildings, campus dance bands, the 1963 college centennial, sports (including women’s sports and Title IX implementation), physically handicapped student accessibility, summer theater, and clippings from campus, local, and surrounding community newspapers (e.g., Alumni News,  Update newsletter,  Topeka State Journal)The folders are arranged alphabetically by subject title, in their original order. Books are shelved with the boxes.. Also included are reports of and interviews about faculty incidents and firings (faculty members Price and Tandy), as well as the Whippoorwill accident.
