Biographical/Historical note

William Albert Black was born November 25, 1897, in Green County, Missouri. He attended Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1926 and a Master of Science degree on May 25, 1934. He earned a doctorate degree in philosophy, education, and psychology from the University of Colorado. William taught and coached at Blue Mound, Kansas, before serving as superintendent in Uniontown. He also taught at Fort Scott Junior College, as President of the Pueblo Junior College in Pueblo, Colorado, as Director of Junior Colleges and Curriculum for the state of Washington, and as head of the Department of Education and Psychology at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. William was a 1962 recipient of the Kansas Master Teacher Award. William was a veteran of World War I and served as commander of the American Legion. Other organizational interests included the Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge, The Menninger Foundation, serving as president of the Pueblo Civic Symphony, a member of the Pueblo Hospital Board, chairman of the Crawford County [Kansas] Committee on Mental Health, and lifelong membership in the Methodist Church. William married Marea Belfield of Emporia on November 7, 1920. They were the parents of one son, William Vincent Black. William Albert Black passed away on October 12, 1983.

In 1984, the William A. Black Kansas Master Teacher Endowed Chair was established at Emporia State University by Marea Belfield Black. It provides the salary for a Kansas Master Teacher to spend a summer, semester, or academic year at Emporia State University with the intention of creating valuable experiences for students and meaningful opportunities for the teacher. The chair was endowed in the College of Education.

Scope and Contents note

This collection consists of one diploma issued to Willam Albert Black by Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia, Kansas, on August 27, 1926. It was granted for earning a Bachelor of Science in Education degree and is signed by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, members of the State Board of Regents, and President and Registrar of Kansas State Teachers College.
