Biographical/Historical note

The Department of School Leadership / Middle and Secondary Teacher Education (SLEME) is one of the core units of Emporia State University’s Teachers College. This department includes undergraduate and graduate courses designed to promote leadership and develop aspiring middle and secondary educators and administrators. This department includes the traditional undergraduate Secondary Education program, and the following graduate programs: Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Administration, which can also be earned as a non-degree, building-level certification, an Educational Administration program which offers district-level certification, Instructional Leadership, and a Master of Education in Teaching online degree program. The department also offers a Driver Education Certification program.

The Department of School Leadership / Middle and Secondary Teacher Education began as the Division of Educational Administration in 1991/1992. Carter L. Burns served as the first division chairperson followed by Lawrence Lyman in 1992/1993 and Howard Smith from 1993/1994 to 1995/1996. In 1996/1997 Stuart Ervay held the position of acting chairperson and the Division of Educational Administration changed its name to the Division of School Leadership / Middle and Secondary Teacher Education. The following year Jerry Will became the chairperson of the division and in 2000/2001 the name changed to the Department of School Leadership / Middle and Secondary Teacher Education.
