81st Annual Riggs Reunion

2009 Riggs Reunion Minutes

The 81st annual JD and Lucinda Riggs’ Family Reunion was held at the Burns Community Center, Burns, Kansas on July 26th, 2009 with 42 members and friends attending.

After a group picture was taken, the invocation was given by Calvin Schmidt followed by a basket dinner.

The business meeting was called to order by President, Dianne Dewey. Lela Heacock led the group in singing America The Beautiful. Each person attending then introduced themselves and their spouse and told their line of ancestors. First time family attendees were: Jim and Nicole Hoch, Warrenville, Illinois and Kevin, Dyane and Paul Smokorowski, Andover, Kansas. Minutes from last year were read by Reta Riggs Cox, secretary. Richard Riggs moved and Betty Bryant seconded that the minutes be approved as read. Motion carried. Treasurer’s report was given stating that there was a 7/31/2008 balance of $193.46, donations $220.00 by free will offering, $48.00 for cookbooks and directories for a total income of $461.46; expenses: postage for mailing cookbooks in Aug. 2008 was $17.46 and $75.00 for the hall rental totaling $92.46. We have an outstanding bill of $360.37 for the cookbooks. A $600.00 check had been mailed to Esther Henderson in Aug. 2008 to reduce the bill of printing the cookbooks leaving a balance of $360.37 still owed to her. Another check was mailed to Esther Aug. 2009 of $250.00 leaving her balance of $110.37 still owed on cookbooks. This leaves the treasurer with a balance of $119.00 for the upcoming year. It was moved and seconded that the treasurer’s report be accepted. Motion carried. The secretary reported that only emails had been sent out for the reunion this year. Because of finances the officers had decided not to mail out invitations for this year. It was the concensus of the group attending to continue with email only invitations. It was moved by Richard Riggs and seconded by Randy Riggs to retain the current officers. Motion carried. It was announced that Mildred Cox was not in attendance because she had fallen and hurt her arm. Gifts were given to: the oldest person attending the reunion who was Loren Cox, 92, Newton; the youngest member attending was Lydia Walker, born June 10, 2009, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Art Walker, Wichita, KS.; and for those who had come the farthest distance, Mr. and Mrs. Max Riggs, Sonoma, CA. The group decided to have the reunion in the Burns Community Center again next year and asked that Fern Goodwin reserve the building for us. The Burns Museum was opened to those who were interested. Points of Interest:

There is a map in the new Riggs’ Directory with many of our family’s historical places. Directories are now available. They will be at the reunion or will be mailed to you upon your order. Directories are $3.00 each.

We have printed a family cookbook with the recipes that you submitted to us. These are, also, now available for mailing or can be obtained at the reunion. Cookbooks are $8.00 each; however, if you want both the Directory and the Cookbook, the set is $10.00. Please include an additional $3.00 for each set to cover the postage if the order is to be mailed.

We will try to have The Burns Museum open at the old grade school on Sunday. There are many items there from family members.

Because the cost of postage has gone up again and we still owe for printing the cookbooks and directories, your officers decided not to do a USPO mailing for this year’s reunion. Please notify all your relatives who do not have an email address of this year’s reunion and the Saturday night supper.
