Part 2c - Sending pages to the server using WS_FTP

WSFTP Screen Shot. The WSFTP screen shot to the left highlights the steps outlined below...

  1. Set the Host Name to www.emporia.edu
  2. Fill in your UserID and password
  3. Click Okay NOTE: The first time you publish fill in a Profile name (e.g. "WebPage") and press the Save button. The next time all you have to do is select the profile from the drop down box and it will remember these settings.
  4. You'll now get this dialog box...

Enter "/web/yourdirectory" - this will get you to the site you've been given access to as a Web Manager. Now you should have a whole new window open that looks something like this (only bigger and less blurry - we had to manipulate this so it wouldn't take forever for the image to load)...

Click here to see a clearer image of this.

  1. Look on the right side of the screen, under "Remote System" - see that long directory path "/usr/netscape/suitespot/docs/cetech/"? Your thinking, "But wait, she just said to type in /web/, not that huge long directory path thing!" Well, actually, /web/ is a shortcut for usr/netscape/suitespot/docs/ - we wanted to save you some typing. So now, by having the remote system set, you've told your machine where you want to send your web files to.
  2. Now, look at the left side of the screen, under "Local System" - see it reading the file where you just opened the WSFTP program up from? (In this case, C:\Program Files\WS_FTP.) I'll bet you don't have your web pages saved in this directory. What you'll need to do is figure out the path to your web files. Example: Let's say my cetech web pages are in a folder - named "cetech" on...
    • my desktop, I'd hit the "ChgDir" (for "change directory") button on the left side of the screen, under "Local System". I'd get the following image...
Image - local directory name
    • I'd then enter "C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP" and be able to navigate to my "cetech" folder (very similar to navigating using MS' File Manager from a few years ago).
    • If my web files were on a disk, I'd enter the appropriate drive, such as "A:\"
    • Note: the quotes aren't necessary to you - it's what's in between you need to worry about. You MUST enter the letter, a colon and a back slash in order for the computer to know where you want it to look.
  1. Now you're in the system and you've got where you want your files to go and where you want to send them from. All you have to do now to publish your images and web pages is to simply select the file(s) from the left window and click on the arrow pointing to the right (-->) to publish to the web server, aka "Remote System." (The arrows are in the middle of the screen and look like the image below.)

To copy from the web sever back to the local directory, select the file(s) in the lower right column and click on the <- button.

  • Once a file is selected you can rename or delete it by clicking on the appropriate button.
  • Note that WS_FTP will time out and disconnect you from the server if left idle for a few minutes.
