Web Applications

The purpose of this section is to make content authors aware of the web applications available to them on the emporia.edu domain in accordance with the ESU Web Presence Policy and Guidelines. This is a living document and will be updated as other web applications are added.

Please note: the use of all web applications need to be approved in writing by the University Webmaster. Applications include but not limited to calendars, all and any scripts regardless of which programming language they are written in, widgets, analytics, etc.

SlideShowPro Director

The university uses Slidehowpro Director to host images and videos depending on the location of usage. It is currently being used in the following places:

University Homepage - http://www.emporia.edu

Admissions Homepage - http://www.emporia.edu/admissions

Memorial Union pictures section of their renovation site: http://www.emporia.edu/murenovation/?page_id=10

Photo and Video Gallery of Sociology and Anthropology's Website: http://www.emporia.edu/socanth/photo-gallery.htm

The interface is very intuitive and flexible. It shows the images and videos in flash format on desktop computers. It then falls back to HTML5 when visitors visit through a mobile device. The only exception to the use of this platform is that videos need to be encoded as .h264 codec in Quicktime format to play on mobile devices.

The University Webmaster can modify to any size, color and available choices of functionality preferred by the content author.

To use Slideshowpro on your site, please contact the University Webmaster. The process is really simple. After determining your requirements and where the interface is to be placed, the University Webmaster develops the interface, places the interface in the desired location, and populates it with the images and videos provided.

YouTube

Emporia State University has an official YouTube presence at http://www.youtube.com/user/emporiastateuniv. Departments are encouraged to use the official YouTube platform as host for videos on the emporia.edu domain. This not only saves emporia.edu from high bandwidth costs but at the same time ensures compatibility with all Operating Systems, including mobile devices.

The process to have your video posted on YouTube is:

  1. Ensure that the video meets the video guidelines found under Guidelines -- Video.
  2. Provide the video to the University Webmaster on a CD/DVD/or a USB Flash Drive. Please note at the time of submitting the video whether the media is to be returned to you.
  3. Please allow 3-4 business days for Marketing and Media Relations to review the video. It will take about 2 days for the video to appear on YouTube after the University Webmaster has posted the video.
  4. The University Webmaster will send the requesting person an email notifying him or her of the video placement on YouTube.
  5. Videos on Emporia State University's official YouTube site can then be embedded into departmental webpages using dotCMS. Please note: videos only from Emporia State University's official YouTube site are granted permission to be posted on the emporia.edu domain. Other videos from other sites are not approved and will need to be requested from the University Webmaster.
ISSUU

ISSUU is the leading digital publishing platform delivering exceptional reading experiences of magazines, catalogs, and newspapers. Millions of people have uploaded their favorite publications to create beautiful digital editions. We have purchased ISSUU's services to better serve the ESU web community in displaying its digital documents. Ever wanted your documents in that nice page flip transition on the Web? The University Webmaster can do that for you. Following are some of the example web pages where we are already using the service:

Strategic Planning - http://www.emporia.edu/strategicplanning/strategicplan.html

President's Website on Excellence Engaged document - http://www.emporia.edu/president/excellence-engaged.html

School of Business on its 25 Year Report - http://www.emporia.edu/business/25year/

Following is the procedure to get your document in a page-flip format:

  1. Email the University Webmaster the document.
  2. In that email please state the location where that document would go on the emporia.edu domain.
  3. The University Webmaster will upload the document to ISSUU's services and provide the content author a link to post on their departmental webpage.

That's it. It's easy as that. Some things to keep in mind when using this service:

  • Not all documents will be published in page-flip format. Please be selective in choosing the documents you feel strongly about having displayed in this format.
  • ISSUU's current services are not compatible with mobile devices. All documents posted in this format should have downloadable links below the page-flip document for users of mobile devices. ISSUU is currently working on making their service mobile-device compatible.
