Video
We encourage the use of rich videos on your departmental webpages to bring a more engaging user experience to your site. Please approach the University Webmaster in the early stages of the video shoot planning process. We do not wish for you to put in the time and effort creating a video only to find out at a later stage that the video cannot be uploaded to your departmental website.
How Can We Help?
By letting the University Webmaster know about your video needs in advance, he could help you with scripting, shooting, and editing of the video. Please note this is not a service we usually provide, but we will try to accommodate your video needs as much as we can. The entire process can take up to 4-6 weeks so please plan ahead.
Video Format and Guidelines
- Video has to be in a format compatible with all Operating Systems including mobile devices. With that said, we know it is a daunting task to ensure that the video is compatible across all platforms. The University Webmaster can advise you on how this can be achieved with resources on hand.
- The final video resolution to be uploaded to the web needs to be a minimum 427X240px (240p) and a maximum of 1280X720px (720p). Please note you would need to justify the need for your video to be at 720p on the web if not using the Emporia State University's YouTube presence as the video service.
- The maximum size of the video (if not using ESU's official YouTube presence) is 100Mb dependent on the resolution. Videos are generally in the 5-50Mb range for smooth buffering.
- You will need video releases for all models shot in the video.
- You are welcome to create your own music, but remember it must be original -- copyrighted music performed by you is still copyrighted and cannot be used without a signed release from you.
- You are not permitted to use any copyrighted material of any kind in your films. Please be very careful. Copyrighted material includes but is not limited to film clips, television clips, audio clips, video game clips, books, magazines, etc. Even featuring the image of an item that is copyrighted (like the cover) can violate the law so please be extremely cautious to protect yourself.
- Videos need to contain English subtitles encoded on the video itself and an external English subtitles text file made available on request. You may use Universal Subtitles service for adding subtitles to your videos provided you fully understand their terms and service. An excerpt of their terms and service is pasted below:
"For clarity, you retain all of your ownership rights in your Content. However, by submitting Content to Universal Subtitles, you hereby grant Universal Subtitles a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and transmit the Content in connection with the Service and Universal Subtitles (and its successors' and affiliates') business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or all of the Service (and derivative works thereof) in any formats and through any media channels. You also hereby grant each user of the Service a non-exclusive license to access your Content through the Service, and to use, reproduce, distribute, display and perform such Content as permitted through the functionality of the Service and under these Terms of Service. You also hereby grant each user of the Service a non-exclusive license to improve your Content through the Service by editing and/or translating your Content. Enforcement of Guidelines
It will be up to the Director of Marketing and Media Relations and the University Webmaster to decide whether the final video product is acceptable and in compliance. Videos may be removed from any website on the emporia.edu domain at the discretion of the Director of Marketing and Media Relations and/or the University Webmaster.
Use of ESU's YouTube Presence
Emporia State University has an official YouTube presence that can be found at http://www.youtube.com/user/emporiastateuniv. We encourage the use of the official YouTube service as the host for your video.
