Q. I’m new to all of this. Where can I learn about making a Web page?

A. Access to the Web Development Resource Guide will help you in getting started with Web page design and implementation.

Q. How do I get access to the web server?

A. Fill out the Web Manager Agreement. The University Webmaster will contact you concerning your access.

Q. Can our division or department have its own custom web address?

A. Please fill out the Custom Web Address Registration form to request a custom web address or contact the University Webmaster at webmaster@emporia.edu for details.

Q. Can I use a Web publishing program such as Microsoft FrontPage, Netscape Composer, Dreamweaver, Adobe PageMill, or Adobe GoLive?

A. The Office of Web Development encourages the use of Contribute which is available free to all campus departments. Please contact the University Webmaster to inquire about receiving a copy. The university template only functions in Dreamweaver / Contribute. We do not support the implementation of the template in other web development tools.
Also, you are allowed to utilize any web development tools of your choosing, however, we do not support additional products beyond Dreamweaver and Contribute with regards to training, coding problems, installation and setup.
Note: FrontPage extensions are not supported on the ESU web server.

Q. What are the best web safe fonts?

A. If you are using Dreamweaver or Contribute, you do not need to worry about fonts. However, if you are using some other development tool, we recommend using one of the following:
Trebuchet MS, Bit stream Vera sans, Verdana, Lucida, Arial, Helvetica, or san-serif

Q. How do I put my files on the web?

Core FTP

A. Once the file is ready to be transferred, left click on the file you want transferred. Then click the arrow in the direction you would like to move the file.

WS-FTP

A. WS FTP is similar to Core FTP. Locate the file you would like to transfer, and click on the arrow in the direction you would like to move the file.

Q. Is it possible to control which file is the default for a site?

A. Your homepage should be named index.htm, index.html, or index.php.

Q. Why do I get "404 - Not Found" errors when I try to view my Web page?

A. A 404 Error is caused when the URL you are being directed to does not exist. If you get this error, please make sure the file is where you want it to be, also, check the spelling of the file and the spelling on the link you are clicking on. Links at Emporia State are Case-sensitive meaning; Index.htm and index.htm are two seperate file names.

Q. Why do I get "500 - Internal Server" errors when I try to view my Web page?

A. A 500 error occurs because of a server issue. If you are encountering these issues please notify the University Webmaster at webmaster@emporia.edu.

Q. How can I check for broken links on my web site?

A. The Office of Web Development has at its disposal a wide-range of tools that will assist in identifying problems on your Website. We can analyze and identify problems relating to broken links, accessibility compliance, and programming issues. Please contact the University Webmaster at webmaster@emporia.edu to inquire about these services.

Q. I want people to send me e-mail about my Web page. How do I do that?

A. If you would like people to send you email, you can create a link on your page using a mailto:youremail@example.com link as supposed to a regular URL link. That will allow users to send you email.
