The Department of School Leadership/Middle and Secondary Teacher Education boasts a rich tradition of graduating many effective Kansas teachers and administrators. Well over 25% of current administrators in Kansas have at least one degree from The Teachers College at Emporia State University. Recently the department completed a review of its existing curriculum and strengthened course content in order to better prepare school leaders for the 21st century.
The department continues a collaborative relationship with professional organizations through active faculty participation and sponsorship, annual summer workshops of the Kansas Association of School Administrators (KASA), the Kansas Association of Elementary School Principals (KAESP), and the Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals (KASSP).
Bachelor of Science, Secondary Education
Teacher candidates at Emporia State University complete a rigorous program of preparation. First, students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Education degree in secondary education select the content area(s) in which they would like to teach. They are then advised by a faculty member from that content area. For example, if a student wants to become a high school biology teacher, s/he would be advised by the biology education advisor from the Department of Biology.
Master of Science, Curriculum and Instruction
Emporia State University’s Curriculum and Instruction master’s degree is a 34-credit hour program intended for individuals who teach or lead programs in all levels of public and private education. This degree accommodates various areas of interest through three areas of concentration: Curriculum Leadership, Effective Practitioner, or National Board Certification. Classes are available online during the spring, fall, and summer semesters. Practicum is completed during the final fall or spring semester of the program.
Master of Science or Licensure, Educational Administration Building-Level
Emporia State University’s Building-Level Master degree and Licensure program are 35 credit hour programs intended for licensed school personnel interested in becoming educational administrators. Classes are available online during the spring, fall, and summer semesters. Practicum is completed during the final fall and spring semesters of the program.
Educational Administration District-Level Certification
Emporia State University’s District-Level Certification is an 18-hour program intended for individuals currently licensed at the building level for educational administration. Classes are available online during the summer semester only and the practicum is offered online during the fall and spring semesters. All coursework must be successfully completed before starting practicum.
Master of Education in Teaching
Emporia State University’s Master of Education in Teaching helps teachers, library/media specialists, and school counselors develop their skills and knowledge of teaching. The Master of Education in Teaching degree does not lead to a teaching license or any additional endorsements to a license. The Master of Education in Teaching is a 36-credit hour program which can be completed online. It is for any teacher who wants to obtain a masters in education. For individuals who are in the Restricted Licensure program at Emporia State University, the 21 credits earned in that program all count toward the 36 hours needed for this degree.
Driver Education Certification
Emporia State University is the only Kansas school offering the Driver Education Certification program. Driver education prepares students for successful careers and a lifetime of informed choices to insure personal safety to self and others on the road.
