Options for an educator who is not in a position to move to the professional license

  • Renewal options
    • Retake assessments
      • Initial teaching license – Content test and PLT

OR

  • Eight hours of credit related to current endorsements on license (does not have to be graduate level credit, check with your PDC)

OR

  • One year of accredited experience (if from out-of-state under a valid license in that state)

OR

  • Professional development points earned through a local professional development council:
    • Same as for renewing a professional license
    • Points must be related to content or professional education standards
    • 120 points if a graduate degree is held – no credit hours required
    • 160 points if no graduate degree is held, only bachelor’s degree – 80 of the 160 points must be earned through credit hours

OR

  • Eight hours from an approved program
    • Teaching, school specialist or school leadership program

Note by ESU Licensing Officer:

The above options are required to receive a third Initial Teaching License. The second Initial Teaching License can be obtained by submitting FORM 20 with the license fee to KSDE without any additional requirements, if done during the effective dates of your first initial license or within 5 years of the effective date of your first initial license.

Completing the

Kansas Performance Assessment

To be eligible for a Professional Teaching License

Each Initially License teacher must complete a year-long, district-administered induction and mentoring program to pass the teaching performance assessment as a prerequisite to receiving a professional teaching license (the five (5) year license).

Requirements that must be met (which are applicable to new ESU graduates and post bac program completers):

  1. Candidates must hold a current Initial Teaching License
  2. Candidates must be teaching in the area in which they are licensed by either the Initial license or a provisional license endorsed area.
  3. Candidates working under a waiver are not eligible.
  4. Candidate is working in a school that is accredited by the state board or by a national or regional accrediting agency recognized by the state board or a comparable agency in that state.

This is a Kansas State Department of Education license requirement!

For Parallel Pathways Licensed School Counselors AND School Psychologists

To upgrade to the Professional School Specialist license, you must complete a supervised internship.
