Teaching Philosophy

"To make my classes seem important and enjoyable to 15-year olds, I utilize many different types of instruction, but I usually follow the methodology of Progressivism.

This method optimizes learning styles that are student-centered and discovery-oriented while at the same time promotes problem solving and cooperative learning skills.  I try to act more like a coach while I guide the kids through their projects.  Allowing them

to work together, possibly competing while having fun, gives them the opportunity to connect science concepts.  They can explore how science can affect their lives and the society in which they live."

What People Say

A former master teacher said this of Alexander, "I have never seen a teacher who could motivate and get more out of students than Alex.  He has the ability that allows him to get the most out of kids - but not because of the grade he gives them, but because the kids want to do their best.  He motivates students to do their best and to accomplish more than even they thought they could do."

A former student said this of Alex, "Mr. Specht has truly been one of the most influential role models of my life.  I think of him not only as a former teacher and coach, but also as a mentor and friend.  In the classroom he taught me the basics of biology and general science, on the court he taught me the basics of basketball defense and shooting, and through it all he taught me the basics of life--to never give up and fight hard for what I believe; to never do something halfway, but always give 110%.  He always brought out the best in me, and helped me to see it in myself."
