The Teachers College at Emporia State University is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), 2010 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20036; phone (202) 466-7496.  This accreditation covers initial and advanced educator preparation programs.  NCATE is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit programs for the preparation of teachers and other professional school personnel.

Alternate Route/Restricted License Program
Questions Regarding State Regulations

  1. Do I have to be hired full-time? No, but you must be hired at least half-time and your employment for alternate route program subject area must be the equivalent of fifty percent of a full-time position.
  2. What kind of license will I receive? If all requirements are met for the license, you will be issued a restricted license by the Kansas State Department of Education for the alternate route program subject area(s).  This license may be reissued twice for a total of three years.
  3. What is the GPA requirement for restricted teaching license? For the restricted teaching license you must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all college work attempted to be issued a restricted license.  This may include the summer courses taken as a part of this program.
  4. What is the GPA requirement for restricted school specialist license? For the restricted school specialist license, you must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 in graduate coursework.
  5. Are there any other requirements for the restricted school specialist license?  Yes, the restricted school specialist license for school counselor requires a minimum of three years of full-time professional counseling and the restricted school specialist license for library media specialist requires three years of full-time professional librarian experience for the license to be issued by the state.  ESU does not determine if your experience meets this state regulation.
  6. Why is a background check required? State regulations require a background check for any school personnel licensed in Kansas.
