Program Summary

PROGRAM SUMMARY
Program Admission Criteria (Decision Point 1)
1. Bachelor’s or master’s degree in the content area
2. At least two years since the completion of the bachelor’s degree or approval of the department.
3. GPA of 2.75 in undergraduate content area courses
4. Cumulative GPA of 2.5 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate college work or approval of the Dean.
5. Three references (forms provided)
6. Interview by The Teachers College or content area faculty
7. Contract for a teaching position in Kansas
8. Approval of the Restricted License Program Committee
9. Kansas background check submitted
10. Application to graduate study (include license desired)
11. Approval of the applicable department; departmental approval incorporates a determination of the applicants background content and includes any remediation plan needed to meet state standards.
Internship Admission Criteria and Procedures (Decision Point 2)
In order to be admitted internship of the Restricted License Program the following requirements must be met:
1. Successfully complete summer coursework resulting in 9 hours of college credit
2. Kansas background check completed
3. Documented experience working with children
4. Restricted teaching license has been issue by KSDE
Candidates will work under the supervision of a University faculty advisor who will conduct observations, provide feedback, and complete formative and summative evaluations. Individual schools will be responsible for providing mentor(s) who will maintain daily support with assistance in routine responsibilities, peer coaching, modeling, and team teaching. During the internship candidates will successfully complete a teacher work sample and 12 semester hours of coursework (6 credit hours each semester; ED 743 or ED 853). Candidates may be recommended for licensure at the end of the first year but may have up to be 3 years to complete the program. Candidates will be required to attend the equivalent of 8 full-day seminars. These will be conducted on-site at the University with optional distance learning sites available based on need.
Continuance in the Program (Decision Point 3)
The following are required for continuance in the program:
1. Pass the Praxis II content by the end of the first year
2. Contract with the employing school district
3. Recommendation of the administration of the employing school
4. Recommendation of the mentor teacher
5. Recommendation of the university supervisors, academic and education
Program Completion (Decision Point 4)
To be recommended for licensure candidates must:
1. Pass the Praxis II Principles of Learning and Teaching Exam (State licensure exam)
2. Pass the Praxis II content by the end of the first year
3. Successfully complete the internship
4. Meet Kansas licensure requirements
5. Successfully complete required coursework, seminars and other requirements
6. Receive recommendation of the employing district
