What Teaching licensure areas are available through this program? History/government, psychology, English language arts, speech/theatre, mathematics, biology, chemistry, earth and space science, physics, business, psychology, and journalism.

May I take the courework if my cumulative GPA is below 2.5? Only if there is a possibility of raising your cumulative GPA to 2.5 before applying for a restricted license.

What is a restricted teaching license? It is a license that allows an individual limited access to practice in a school under a special arrangement among the individual, a Kansas teacher education institution, and an LEA. For ESU’s program this will refer only to the secondary subject areas approved for this program. Special education is not included.

Is this program applicable for middle level licensure? No, it is secondary (6-12) only. However, you may teach grades 6-8 in a middle school in the subject area.

Is this program applicable for PK-12 or elementary level? No, it is secondary (6-12) only. Elementary education and the PK-12 subject areas are not available through the ESU program.

May I teach subjects other than that of the alternate route program subject area? You may teach subjects other than the alternate route subject, but the equivalent of fifty percent of a full-time position must be in the alternate route program area (teaching, school counselor, or library media).

What is the teaching internship? It is a paid position in the school with you serving as a teacher in the licensure subject area.

How long will it take me to complete the program and apply for an initial teaching license? It will take a minimum of one school year and maximum of three school years. Several factors will determine the length of time to complete the program.
