Is this program the same as the transition to teaching program? No, this is a state approved program that is available only through Emporia State University.

What is the deadline for applying for the program? Since enrollment is limited, candidates should apply for the program as early as possible (see the list of admissions criteria for needed application materials). Applications will be considered on a first come first served basis and up until enrollment in the coursework begins. However, enrollment in the coursework does not guarantee admission to the program (internship and restricted license).

May I take the courses before I have a job? Yes, but you may not continue in the program if you do not have a job.

May I be admitted to the program before I have a job? No; to be officially admitted to the program, be issued a restricted license by KSDE, and do the internship you must be employed by a school.

May I take the courses now and be admitted to the program and internship next year? Yes, but you will be subject to any program changes that might occur and subject to approval of alternate route committee.

Are there exceptions to the 2 year period after receiving my bachelor’s requirement? Rare exceptions might be possible, but any such exceptions must be approved by the academic department and the alternate route committee.

What if my bachelor's is in one subject but I want to teach a different subject? If the coursework is equivalent to a bachelor's degree in the subject, your application for the program may be considered. Such an exception must be approved by the academic department and the alternate route committee.

What are Decision Points? They are transition points within the program that determine whether a candidate may continue on to the next stage of the program.

When will the nine semester hours of courses be offered? The courses will be offered every summer. Two of the courses, ED 879 and ED 876 are offered both Summer and Spring semesters.

May I substitute courses that I have taken previously for any of the nine hours? No, there are no course equivalence for the required nine semester hours.

Will the courses be offered online? Yes all courses are being offered online.

Will I have to spend any time on-campus? There will be a one-day orientation on-campus before summer classes begins. There may be additional face to face seminars during the year. At this time we are working on ways to deliver the seminars at different sites or through distance learning technology. There is a chance that one or two might be held on campus on a Saturday.

When will the interview be conducted? No specific date has been set for interviews but personal interviews will be conducted prior to the beginning of the summer coursework. Interviews will be arranged on an individual basis.

Will I be paid by the school district during the internship? Yes, the internship is a paid position. If so, how much? The salary will be determined by the school district.

Will I be provided with assistance during the internship? Yes your school district will provide a mentor and ESU will provide a supervisor.

Who will teach the courses? Emporia State University Faculty will teach all courses.

Will there be additional courses besides the nine summer semester hours? There may be additional content courses required in order for candidates to meet state standards and be able to pass the content exam. The need for additional coursework will be determined through a transcript evaluation.

Are the courses graduate or undergraduate? The nine semester hours of summer courses are graduate level. Additional content courses may be undergraduate or graduate.

Will the courses apply to a master’s degree? There is no degree associated with the alternate route/restricted license coursework but they may be applied as electives to some master’s degree programs. Candidates should check with a department to determine how the courses may be used in a degree program.
