Residence Halls Network
All ESU residence hall rooms are equipped with at least one computer access port that will provide a connection to the Internet and the university’s residence hall LAN (local area connection). All university residence hall residents have access to the residence hall network (also known as the “Res-Net”). These connections are restricted by the same rules and restrictions that apply to the use of all university computer resources.
Wireless Availability in Residence Halls
General Restrictions
Please review the following restrictions for connecting to the Residence Hall network:
- You must accept ESU’s Acceptable Use Policy, part of the University Policy Manual (Chapter 3, Institutional Policies, Section 3H.03: Acceptable Use of Computing and Information).
- All computers connecting to the ESU network (wired or wireless) must be equipped with a valid, up-to-date anti-virus application. Don’t have an anti-virus solution? Check out the Student Access tab in Techsite for freeware solutions!
- You may use a switch if you have multiple pieces of equipment to connect to the Internet.
- TCS does not recommend hubs or routers. Already bought a router? Call the TCS Helpdesk (341.5555 or extension 5555 on campus) for help configuring it as a switch.
- You may not setup an internal wireless network in your room. Doing so has the potential to conflict with the Res-Net which can cause other students to not connect to the network.
Connecting to the Res-Net
- Using an Ethernet cable, plug your computer into the ESU Residence Hall Network port in your Res Hall room.
- Open any Internet browser (Operating systems and Internet browsers tested include Windows XP, Vista, and 7; Mac OS X; Internet Explorer 6, 7, and 8; Mozilla Firefox 2 and 3; Safari; Google Chrome).
- Your web browser will automatically be routed to the ESU Res Net User Registration page.
- Read the Acceptable Use of Computing and Information Technology Resources policy for ESU that appears on the page, and click the accept button. Note: If you see a "There is a problem with this website's security certificate page, click Continue to this website (not recommended). This is a secure website for ESU.
- Enter your ESU username and password (the same as you use to log on to Buzz In).
- Click Register. A "Registration is now complete" page will appear.
- Close your browser and restart your computer. You will now have access to the Internet.
Registration will be required for your computer every 180 days. You will be prompted after 180 days to re-register your computer.

Troubleshooting
- Verify that your computer is plugged into the Res-Net via an Ethernet cable.
- Verify that the Ethernet cable is plugged into the wall network access port and not the phone port.
- Verify that you are using a Category 5 network cable (a phone cord will not work).

Wireless Availability in Residence Halls
The ESU Wireless network is currently available in Twin Towers, Singular, and Trusler. The ESU Wireless network is not available in any Morse Hall at this time. For more information on the ESU Wireless network, please see the ESU Wireless section of the TCS website.
Gaming Systems Support
TCS can offer limited support for gaming systems (Xbox, PlayStation, etc.) and gaming websites (WoW, etc.); however, the configuration and connection is the sole responsibility of the student.
