Message from the Vice President for Student Affairs

Dear Emporia State Hornets,

Jim Williams Vice President for Student Affairs

I am extremely pleased to welcome you to campus, either for the first time, or back to Emporia State University for another fast-paced, exciting year!

This is an exciting time in your educational journey as well as the history of Emporia State. This year you will find yourselves caught up in the legacy of celebrating 150 years of “Changing Lives”.  As Vice President for Student Affairs, I am excited to work with you and the dedicated individuals within the division to provide programs and services that foster success academically and beyond. We take our responsibility very seriously as a partner in your education!

As part of this partnership, I have three requests during the upcoming year:

Be Active in Your Learning. Commit to going to class, spending time with your professors and classmates. Learning occurs outside the classroom, be active by attending theatre productions, concerts, athletic events and community events.

Be Involved in Your College Experience. With well over 130 student organizations there are opportunities for involvement. The Center for Student Involvement in the Memorial Student Union is a must visit spot on the campus. Assume a leadership position early and grow in your civic engagement, volunteer.

Be Safe. Emporia State and the Emporia community are located within one of the most breathtaking landscapes in the nation. The relationship between the community and the university is close. However, we all play a part in the safety and security of this campus and community. Collectively we must all be vigilant about taking care of ourselves and each other. Please always remember to report suspicious behavior, ask for help when needed, and make smart choices within the context of your freedoms.

This is an exciting time not only in your lives but also on the campus of Emporia State University.  I am honored to challenge and support you in your learning and growth.

Go Hornets!

Jim Williams, Ph.D.
