International Education

More than 300 students from approximately 40 countries are enrolled at Emporia State University each semester. The international students enrich the university’s cultural atmosphere and bring a special quality of warmth and friendliness to the campus community.

All non-U.S. residents holding F-1 or J-1 visas who attend ESU are classified as international students. The Office of International Education handles all admission correspondence with prospective international students, reviews and evaluates foreign transcripts and credentials, and issues all government exchange and immigration forms. The office also conducts regular enrollment/registration sessions and offers an ongoing Orientation to American Society course, an Intensive English Program, and study-abroad opportunities for American students through several exchange programs. One of the objectives of the office is to offer all international students assistance in adapting to changes in customs and cultures.

The Office of International Education provides a wide variety of cultural programs for the campus and the Emporia community. These special events are planned with a variety of campus organizations to promote the development of understanding among peoples of the world. Among the events sponsored throughout the year are  the international food festival, global trivia, talent and fashion shows, displays, dinners, dances, films, mini-olympics, and guest speakers. The ESU International Choir is well-known and performs for numerous campus and community groups.

James F. Harter is the Assistant Vice President for International Education. The Office of International Education is located in the lower level of the Memorial Union. For more information, call 341-5374. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Visit our website at <http://www.emporia.edu/oie>.
