ESSAY 1

Answer ONE of the following in an organized, thoughtful essay:

1.  Do you have a single, unchanging self which remains constant throughout your life and perhaps beyond? Explain and defend your view by comparing it to TWO of the following: Hinduism, Buddhism, Hume, Schopenhauer, Plato, Parfit, Sartre.

2.  Explain Plato’s views on the relation of soul and body and the criticisms Spelman makes of his position. Why does Spelman believe this issue is still important today, and what changes does she believe should be made? Evaluate Spelman’s argument.

Essays must be at least 600 words, typewritten, double-spaced, and stapled. Proof-read your essays and include your name, section, and a word count on the first page. Essays must be brought to class on Monday, February 5th.
