Geography of Kansas, GE 333ZA

Spring 2002

Professor Ellen Hansen

This course is an examination of the physical environment, resources, land use characteristics, and cultures of Kansas, in the context of the region of the Great Plains. Because the larger regional context is vital in understanding why Kansas is what it is, how it has come to be this way, and what the future might hold for the people of the state, the course really should be called the Geography of Kansas and the Great Plains.

We will examine historical changes and current issues related to the environment, society and culture, settlement patterns (urban and rural), political and institutional structures, and the economy. The goal of this class is a greater understanding of the area we live in--the physical and human environment of Kansas and the Great Plains.
