Geography of
International Development
Geography 300 ZA
Professor Ellen
Hansen
Since the second half of the
20th century the wealthy countries of the world have invested in what
we call "development" activities in the less wealthy countries. This
course examines the idea of development as it has been carried out in
different parts of the world. We will attempt to define development and
will explore its impacts on the various countries where it has been and
continues to be carried out. We will focus on different groups of
people and how their lives have been shaped by development efforts,
including indigenous peoples, women, marginalized groups, and wealthy
people in low-income countries. All people on earth are involved in and
affected to some extent by what is commonly called globalization. This
course will introduce students to the importance of place and the
diversity of the world's cultures in the current context of development
and globalization.
