JOSHUA MACGILLIGAN

Joshua followed his father's footsteps. After completing his education, Joshua got a job at the same firm as his father. In fact, he even surpassed his father, and eventually became a partner in the firm. This was an impressive feat for a man only one generation removed from the Irish peasantry. In England, the Irish were seen as a subservient group, so to get his place in the firm, Joshua had to turn his back on all things Irish. He suppressed his Irish accent, dressed in the latest English styles, and gained membership to a club. He even joined the Anglican church and married well born English woman named Susanna Long. In fact, the only thing about Ireland Joshua did not turn his back on were his father and mother.
