Helen was one person in the MacGilligan family who did quite well for herself. Helen married a merchant, Brendan O'Flaherty, who owned a couple of ships, which carried goods and immigrants between Europe, the United States, and Canada. In marrying a fairly well to do merchant Helen had made her way into respectable society. In fact within a few years Helen had made a name for herself as quite a socialite.
