                                             Light and Knowledge!

“If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it.”
Margaret Fuller

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology has had an interesting year. Our student credit hour per faculty production is again among the highest in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.  In addition, we have 202 Sociology majors with 49 minors and 29 Crime and Delinquency Studies (CDS) majors and 11 minors.  This was the first year for the Crime and Delinquency Studies program.

Most of the faculty members will be continuing on in the Department for the 2007-08 academic year.  Marc Goodman, Mary Halleran, Missy Bane-Shelton, Mike Halleran and Cindy Maxwell are still with us teaching in their specialized fields.  We are adding Mr. Clint Epperly to teach Criminology this fall (2007).  Dr. Camara has been approved for a fall sabbatical and we wish him a very productive semester.  Unfortunately, Dr. Myers has decided to leave us early.  We wish her well in her future endeavors.  The rest of the faculty members are doing fine.

The biggest news for the year . . . the Sociology checklist now has Social Services/Family Studies and Anthropology Tracks; the new Anthropology minor starts this fall (2007); and the department was approved for an equipment request of $25,611.88 for five faculty computers, nineteen student lab computers and construction to move our current computer lab across the hall to BC 116 to construct a lab with 23 computers for students.  Construction began this summer.

Students, students and more students!  Eight Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society students, four Sociology Club members, and three Anthropology Club members attended the Southwestern Social Science Association Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico.   Next year the conference will be in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Alpha Kappa Delta initiated 23 members on April 9, 2007.  Ms. Erin Schmidt was named the 2007 Sociology and Anthropology Department’s Outstanding Senior.  Seven Anthropology Club members attended and two students presented at the Plains Anthropological Conference in Topeka, Kansas.  Twelve students (4 groups) presented at the Sixth Annual Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium.  The Student Advisory Council’s (E. Simms, K. Van Schoelandt, E. Coffin, D. Orth, and A. Sosa-Harrell) concern over theory classes not being equal between the Sociology and CDS programs led to the faculty changing the sociology minor to include SO 501 Sociological Theory.

I hope this finds you in good spirit and brings you up-to-date on occurrences within the department.  Please drop us a line and tell your former classmates and us some of your personal and professional achievements.  I wish you all the best in your endeavors and look forward to hearing from you soon.
