Preparing our future today!
“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those
who prepare for it today.”
Malcolm X
The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Crime and Delinquency Studies is doing well. Our student credit hour per faculty production is consistently among the highest in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. We had the second highest student/faculty ratio in the college. In addition, we have 174 Sociology majors with 43 minors, 78 Crime and Delinquency Studies (CDS) majors and 9 minors, and 19 Anthropology minors. We have noticed a big increase in CDS majors, wow!
We had Kurt Haberborn teach a social work class this spring. Along with Mr. Haberkorn, Marc Goodman, Mary Halleran, Mike Halleran and Cindy Maxwell are still with us teaching in their specialized fields. With Dr. Montalvo on sabbatical (fall) and with Dr. Gary Wyatt being the College’s Interim Associated Dean, other faculty members pitched in to help cover classes and advises. Congratulations to Dr. Wyatt! The rest of the faculty members are doing fine.
The biggest news for the year . . . (1) the department is now called the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Crime and Delinquency Studies; (2) due to the State of Kansas’ budget concerns, the Department’s budget was cut by 7%—but unlike other departments, we maintained all faculty and staff during the budget rescission; (3) we collected data for our capstone experience; and (4) the Department has it’s “mission statement” on the website. Lastly, the 2009 Sociology, Anthropology, and Crime and Delinquency Studies Outstanding Senior is Christina Hansen.
Students were traveling this year! Six students (four Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society members) attended the Southwestern Social Science Association Conference in Denver, Colorado (one AKD member co-presented). Alpha Kappa Delta initiated 15 members on April 20, 2009. Five Sociology Club members attended the Midwest Sociological Society conference in Des Moines, Iowa. Seven Anthropology Club members attended an Anthropological Conference in Laramie, Wyoming. Drs. Wyatt and Obermeyer had many students present at the Eight Annual Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium. Finally, seven students attended the Collegiate Law Academy for four days. The academy was hosted by the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Academy in Salina, Kansas. Students had PT in the morning, firearms training, divisive driving training, traffic stop training along with classroom workshops, and they visited the Ellsworth prison.
I hope this finds you in good spirit and brings you up-to-date on occurrences within the department. Please drop us a line and tell your former classmates and us some of your personal and professional achievements. I wish you all the best in your endeavors and look forward to hearing from you soon.
