The Department of Biological Sciences maintains a teaching collection of more than 700 lots of approximately 150 freshwater fish species, primarily those found in Kansas. The collection also contains 150 lots of 50 marine fish species, mostly from the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The Schmidt Museum of Natural History maintains a collection of birds and mammals from Kansas and surrounding areas. The holdings include 500 individual bird mounts and 100 individual mammal mounts on display in the museum, 1,600 bird skins and 1,200 mammal skins in our research collection (with some reserved for teaching), and 150 bird species represented in our egg collection.
