TEACHERS FROM EMPORIA STATE UNIVERSITY COMPLETE A RIGOROUS PROGRAM OF PREPARATION.
A. Coursework: Candidates complete courses in the following three areas:
- General education courses (see college catalog or adviser)
- Courses in the major (see college catalog or adviser)

ED/EL 220, Introduction to Teaching
EL 416, Teaching Reading in the Secondary School
SD 550, Survey of Exceptionality
ED 334, Classroom Management (Phase I)
ED 333, Principles of Secondary Education (Phase I)
PY 334, Educational Psychology (Phase I)
ED 431, Professional Relations of Teachers (Phase II)
LE 487, Student Teaching (Phase II)
B. Decision Point* 1: Candidates are admitted to secondary teacher education and the Phase I courses when the candidate meets all the criteria listed below prior to the start of the Phase I semester and are in their junior or senior year. Application deadlines are April 30 (for Fall) and November 30 (for Spring).
- Meet the minimum scores on either the Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST): Writing 172, Reading 173, Math 172).
- Complete 100 hours of supervised child advocacy service, Form A and B
- Submit completed Disclosure Statement and health clearance

Earn a grade of at
least “C” in the
following courses:
ED/EL 220, Introduction to Teaching
MA110, College Algebra (or equivalent)
EG101, English Composition I
EG102, English Composition II
SP101, Public Speaking
MA225, Math as a Decision-making Tool - Earn a GPA of 2.75 in the General Education Core Courses
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.50
- Have successfully completed 60 hours of college credit
- Obtain departmental approval (including, but not limited to, meeting dispositional assessment and GPA requirements)
- Complete the application process for Phase I
C. Decision Point* 2: Candidates are admitted to Phase II (Student Teaching) their senior year when they meet all the criteria listed below:
- Complete all education courses required before the student teaching semester, earning a grade of at least a “C” in each.
- Complete the student teaching application
- Obtain 5 recommendations from designated instructors
- Obtain departmental approval (including, but not limited to, meeting dispositional assessment and GPA requirements.
- Complete the technology requirement (IT125 or equivalent)
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.50
- Be approved by the Admissions Committee
- Submit completed and signed Disclosure Statement
- Obtain health clearance
D. Decision Point* 3: Candidates complete Student Teaching when they meet the criteria listed below:
- Earn a grade of “C” or better in Student Teaching
- Satisfactorily complete the Teacher Work Sample assessment and all other Student Teaching requirements
E. Decision Point* 4: Candidates will complete their degree and qualify for provisional teacher licensure when they meet all the criteria listed below:
- Complete all required degree coursework & requirements
- Meet the minimum score on the Principles of Learning and Teaching exam (161), a graduation and licensure requirement.
- Successfully complete the content area exam(s), a graduation and licensure requirement.
