Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to use the Student Health Center?

Degree-seeking students pay a fee each semester and in the summer to access the Student Health Center; the fee for 2007-2008 is $62.65 per semester for spring and fall semesters and $9.60/credit hour pro-rated for the summer. This entitles the students to access the Health Center facilities and free visits. There is a small charge for all other services (lab tests, pap smears, prescriptions, wrist splints, etc.).  Those ESU students who are normally enrolled but not taking classes in the summer may pay a fee of $40 and access the Health Center in the summer.  Students taking less than 6 credit hours per semester will be assessed an additional fee at the time of the first office visit each semester.  This fee is pro-rated to equal the full-time fee, and is not assessed unless the services are utilized.  This seemed to be the most equitable way to be able to continue full-time healthcare to part-time students.

You can access our fee schedule online - our charges are usually much less than those in the community.

We also have pharmacy services available.

We do not take private health care insurance, but do take the United Healthcare-Student Resources plan. United Healthcare-Student Resources is the plan authorized by the Kansas Board of Regents for student purchase. Contact us with any questions at shc@emporia.edu.

Can anyone else see my records?

If the student is under 18-years-old, s/he must have a signed Health History and consent form from their parents on file in Health Services before they can be treated. If the student is over 18-years-old, no one can see their health records without written consent from the student or a court-ordered subpoena.

HIV testing records are kept in a separate file from students' health records and are not available to any outside entity, even by subpoena.

When is the Student Health Center open?

The Health Center is open from...

8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday

8:00am to 7pm on Thursdays during Fall and Spring semesters

8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday during the summer

We are closed weekends, holidays and during winter break.

Appointments are preferred;  call 620-341-5223 to schedule an appointment.  Patients who become acutely ill during the day may be assessed by a nurse and worked into the schedule if necessary.

What about birth control, STIs, HIV testing etc.?

We offer male and female sexual health checkups, education and prevention programs. Condoms are available at low cost, ask for them at the front desk.

HIV testing and counseling is available.  Contact the Student Health Center to schedule a confidential appointment.

Can my family members be treated?

At this time, we do not have large enough facility or staff to treat family members.  Family members may wish to use the Health Department nearby which has a sliding fee scale (Flint Hills Community Health Center, 420 W 15th, Emporia, KS, 342-4864).

Can I fill my prescriptions at the Health Center?

Pharmacy services are available with prescriptions from a Health Services provider.  If you are on a regular medication (such as birth control), make an appointment and bring in either a current prescription or a current Pap report to get an ESU prescription. You may call in refill requests at 341-5867.

We have a small formulary of items most commonly needed by college students and a supply of over-the-counter items like toothpaste, panty hose and feminine needs.

You can also fill prescriptions written at Health Services at an outside pharmacy (especially if you want to use an insurance card, etc.)

Are there any forms I'll need to fill out before my appointment?

Yes, there is a Health History Form that you will need to fill out and sign. You may either fill it out at the office before your appointment, or you can download the form and bring it with you. To download the form, you will need Adobe® Acrobat® Reader. (Click here for a free copy of Adobe® Acrobat® Reader.)  Click on the item below. (To get back to this page once Adobe® Acrobat® Reader is open, use your browser's "back" button.) In addition, on your first visit you will be asked to complete a more detailed health form as well as get baseline measeurements on blood pressure and weight.  It's always a good idea to come about 10 mintes early for your appointment.

Should I take all the antibiotic I am prescribed if I am feeling better?

Yes, you MUST finish all your antibiotics every time.  If you don't, the "bad" bugs will come back and may even be stronger!  This may also cause resistance to the antibiotics, so that if you are ever really ill, antibiotics won't work as well.

Does antibiotic therapy interfere with birth control pills?

In theory, antibiotics may interfere with the absorption and effectiveness of birth control pills (but not with the Depo injections).  Abstinence or back up method of birth control like condoms or foam is recommended while on antibiotics and for several days after finishing them.

Can I charge my medical/prescription bills to my parents or a credit card?

Not to your parents, but yes to a credit card (There will be a form to fill out).  You are responsible for charges on the day you receive services.  Our charges are very low and the office visit is free.  If you have a financial emergency on the day you need medical services, please visit with office staff about payment arrangements.

Is my information confidential?

Student Health records are kept stricly confidential.  No medical information is ever released without a written consent form from the patient or a court order/subpoena.

HIV testing records are kept in a separate file from a students' other medical records and cannot be accessed by any outside entity, even with a subpoena.

Can I get a Pap smear, HIV check or STI check at the Health Center?

Yes.  Call for an appointment at 620-341-5223.

Do birth control pills prevent STIs or HIV?

No.  Sexually active students are encouraged to practice risk reduction strategies such as limiting the number of lifetime partners and using latex or polyurethane condoms correctly and consistently.  Remember: abstinence is the only 100% fool-proof way to prevent both unintended pregnancy and STIs.

What type of shots/immunizations does the Health Center provide?

Health Services routinely stocks and administers vaccine to prevent tetanus, meningococcal meningitis, hepatitis A and hepatitis B, and influenza.  Other vaccines, such as those needed for travel, may be able to be ordered.  For any questions or information about shots for special circumstances please call 620-341-5223.   The new vaccine to prevent cervical cancer is also available, please call to make arrangements.

What is the Student Health Center's policy on Tuberculosis (TB) skin tests?

In accordance with State law, Health Services has initiated a program to prevent Tuberculosis transmission.  In conjunction with the local Health Department and the State of Kansas, Health Services requires that all "high- risk" students provide documentation of TB clearance either by Chest X-Ray or ppd testing done in the United States.  Those "high-risk" students who do not provide such clearance will be required to have TB testing done on arrival to campus.  To determine if you are at high-risk or from a high-risk country, or have questions, please contact Mary McDaniel at: mmcdanie@emporia.edu.
