Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to use Student Health Services?

Degree-seeking students pay a fee each semester and in the summer to access Student Health Services; the fee for 2009-2010 is $63.35 per semester for Spring and Fall semesters and $9.85/credit hour pro-rated for the summer. This entitles students to access the Health Center facilities and free visits. There is a small charge for all other services (lab tests, pap smears, prescriptions, wrist splints, etc.).  Those ESU students who are normally enrolled but not taking classes in the summer may pay a fee of $40 and access the Health Center in the summer.  Students taking less than 6 credit hours per semester will be assessed an additional fee at the time of the first office visit each semester.  This fee is pro-rated to equal the full-time fee, and is not assessed unless the services are utilized.  This seemed to be the most equitable way to be able to continue full-time healthcare to part-time students.

We also have pharmacy services available.

We do not take private health care insurance, but do take the United Healthcare-Student Resources plan. United Healthcare-Student Resources is the plan authorized by the Kansas Board of Regents for student purchase. Contact us with any questions at shc@emporia.edu.

Can anyone else see my records?

If the student is under 18-years-old, s/he must have a signed Health History and consent form from their parents on file in Health Services before they can be treated. If the student is over 18-years-old, no one can see their health records without written consent from the student or a court-ordered subpoena.

When is the Student Health Center open?

The Health Center is open from...

8:00 am - 5:00 pm -- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday

8:00 am to 7:00 pm -- Thursdays during Fall and Spring semesters

8:00 am - 5:00 pm -- Monday through Friday during the summer

We are closed weekends, holidays and during winter break.

Appointments are preferred;  Call 620-341-5223 to schedule an appointment.  Patients who become acutely ill during the day may be assessed by a nurse and worked into the schedule if necessary.

What about birth control, STIs, HIV testing etc.?

We offer male and female sexual health checkups, education and prevention programs. Condoms are available at low cost; ask for them at the front desk.

HIV testing and counseling is available.  Contact the Student Health Center to schedule a confidential appointment.

Can my family members be treated?

At this time, we do not have a large enough facility or staff to treat family members.  Family members may wish to use theFlint Hills Community Health Center which has a sliding fee scale.  They are located at 420 West 15th Avenue, Emporia, KS, 342-4864).

Can I fill my prescriptions at the Health Center?

Pharmacy services are available with prescriptions from a Health Services provider.  If you are on a regular medication (such as birth control), make an appointment and bring in either a current prescription or a current Pap report to get an ESU prescription. You may call in refill requests at 341-5867.

We have a small formulary of medications most commonly needed by college students and a small selection of over-the-counter items.

If you do not wish to purchase your medication at Student Health Services (want to use your prescription insurance) the nurse practitioner will give you a written prescription that can be filled at any retail pharmacy.  Other pharmacies are: Graves Drug Store, 609 Commercial; Medicine Shoppe, 1509 West 12th Avenue and 2715A Condlewood Drive; Walgreen's, 1502 Industrial Road; and Walmart, 2300 Industrial Road. If you need assistance locating a retail pharmacy, please let us know.

Are there any forms I'll need to fill out before my appointment?

Yes, there is a Health History Form that you will need to fill out and sign. Soon we will have the capability for you to complete this and other forms on-line, but for now, please arrive at least 10 minutes early for your first appointment to allow for completion of this paperwork.  If you are not yet 18 years of age by the time you arrive at ESU, you must have a parent or guardian complete and sign the form prior to treatment at Health Services.

Can I charge my medical/prescription bills to my parents or a credit card?

You are responsible for charges on the day you receive services.  Our charges are very low and the office visit is free.  If you have a financial emergency on the day you need medical services, please visit with office staff about payment arrangements. You may pay with cash, check or we can bill your charges to your student account.

What is the training/experience of the clinical staff?

We are very proud of our clinical staff!  We have combined experience of nearly 150 clinical years!  You can "meet" us on our Staff webpage.

Kendall Wright, MD is in Family Practice in Emporia and has been for many years.  In addition to his private practice, he provides medical supervision of and collaboration with our nurse practitioners and is in the clinic a few hours per month.  His role at Health Services is primarily supervisory and consultative, but he does occasionally see patients here as well.

Our Clinical Coordinator, Janice Noyes, ARNP, has been a nurse for over 30 years and an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner for over 20 years, specializing in Women's Health issues.

Our newest staff member is Cindy Moore, who will be joined us in late July as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner.  She comes from an Emergency Room background and is new to college health.

Our Lab Director, Lori Boline, has over 30 years experience in laboratory work and has earned MLT and ASCP status.  She is also the Safety and Quality Control person for the Health Center.

Our nursing staff consists of:

Mary McDaniel, RN,C  Assistant Director of Student Wellness for Health Services and Outreach Coordinator.  Mary's role is primarily administrative, but also does the majority of clinical services outside of the clinic such as Flu shot clinics in the Union or Residence Halls, TB Testing, etc.  Mary is Nationally Board Certified in College Health.

Mary Fry, RN is the only staff nurse available full-time, year-round.  Mary has been at ESU for 9 years and worked in Public Health and private practice prior to switching to College Health.

Linda Ulrey, RN,C has been at ESU for nearly 10 years and has a strong background in Women's Health.  Linda is also Nationally Board Certified in College Health.

All of our staff exceed the minimum number of hours of Continuing education required by law each year.

Is my information confidential?

Student Health records are kept stricly confidential.  No medical information is ever released without written consent from the patient or a court order/subpoena.

Parents may not access your health records, and we must have your consent before we can talk with them about your health concerns.  Of course there are provisions in privacy laws for situations where you may be a danger to yourself or others.  Under certain emergency situations, we may indeed contact parents and appropriate ESU officials.

Can I get a Pap smear, HIV check or STI check at Health Servicesr?

Yes.  Call for an appointment at 620-341-5223.

Do birth control pills prevent STIs or HIV?

No.  Sexually active students are encouraged to practice risk reduction strategies such as limiting the number of lifetime partners and using latex or polyurethane condoms correctly and consistently.  Remember: abstinence is the only 100% fool-proof way to prevent both unintended pregnancy and STIs.

What type of shots/immunizations does Health Services provide?

Health Services routinely stocks and administers vaccine to prevent tetanus, meningococcal meningitis, hepatitis A and hepatitis B, and influenza.  Other vaccines, such as those needed for travel, may be able to be ordered.  For any questions or information about shots for special circumstances please call 620-341-5223.   The new vaccine to prevent cervical cancer is also available, please call to make arrangements.

What is the Student Health Services policy on Tuberculosis (TB) skin tests?

Health Services has initiated a program to prevent Tuberculosis transmission, working with public health and college health officials.  ESU requires that all students at high- risk of TB have clearance by a blood test called "Quantiferon Gold-TB". Chest X-Ray or ppd (skin) testing is not acceptable clearance for students at high-risk. Students at high-risk for TB will have a Quantiferon Gold-TB blood test done on arrival to campus.  To determine if you are at high-risk or from a high-risk country, or have questions, please contact Mary McDaniel at: mmcdanie@emporia.edu.

Students at low-risk for TB may be required to have a TB skin test if in certain areas of academic study, such as teaching or nursing.  Those are available at low cost at Health Services.
