In April of 2014, ESU employees in the classified service voted for a Big Idea to move into a new type of state service. One part of this Big Idea moved authority and control over the University Support Staff Classification and Compensation System to ESU. That Big Idea has opened the door to even bigger ideas, and late last month, ESU signed a contract with CBIZ Human Capital Services to study not only our University Support Staff positions, but also our Unclassified Professional Staff positions as well as the compensation systems aligned with those positions.
The results of this study will strengthen our ability to analyze what and how our competitors pay for similar skills and responsibilities. It will establish processes that value jobs and employees within Emporia State based on each job’s and employee’s contribution to our mission and organizational objectives. Our goals for the new compensation system are that it:
- is fair within Emporia State;
- reflects competitiveness with comparable organizations;
- allows Emporia State to maintain and promote a performance-oriented culture;
- provides Emporia State with flexibility to continue to respond to economic, political, and organizational changes;
- updates our internal human resources and compensation processes; and
- ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
Because we are future-oriented, the focus of this study is to develop a compensation and classification system that will support our goal of retaining and recruiting the best individuals to ensure the continued growth and success of Emporia State. The new system will provide improved tools and information, so that we can make the best and most responsive decisions regarding recruitment, employee development, and compensation.
We’ve barely let the ink dry on the contract, and we’re moving quickly on this important process! Please plan to join the Office of Human Resources and CBIZ on Thursday, December 4 at 8:30 AM in Webb II in the Memorial Union for an overview of the process steps and your role as an employee in the USS or Unclassified service in the process! We plan to video the presentation for those who aren’t able to attend or who would like to view the video later. Keep your eyes and ears open as more information is communicated!
