Rehabilitation Services Education
(Undergraduate Degree Program)
Requirements for a Major
The program for a student with no prior experience requires 44 semester hours for the major. Students generally begin the program at the beginning of the second semester of the sophomore year or the beginning of the junior year. The academic program concludes with a four month period of field experience (internship of 600 clock hours). The program consists of a basic core of courses which is structured to meet all training guidelines of the Rehabilitation Services Administration for undergraduate rehabilitation programs. Students not only become deeply involved with formal didactic course work and practical experience, but are encouraged to develop an area of individual interest.
Students may begin course work by enrolling in the introductory and optional/elective courses available in the division. Students should complete an application to the program and return it to the Director of Rehabilitation Programs. Applicants must have an overall grade point average of 2.50 (on a 4.00 scale). New and transfer students are encouraged to visit with the faculty in the program prior to enrollment.
The undergraduate rehabilitation program is comprehensive and intensive yet flexible and relevant to meet the culturally diverse needs and interests of students. Emphasis is placed on the development of individual case management skills in vocational placement, assessment, client advocacy, knowledge and understanding of disabilities, coordination of services, and the role of community based rehabilitation programs. At Emporia State, students will receive more than theory in the classroom; at the end of the program of study each student will participate in a practical field experience in a rehabilitation agency or facility.
