Dr. Darla Mallein joined the Social Sciences Department in 2001 as the
secondary social sciences education coordinator. As the coordinator, Dr.
Mallein is in charge of the BSE in Social Sciences program and the Master of
Arts in Teaching Secondary Social Sciences program. Prior to joining ESU,
Dr. Mallein was a public school teacher for 20 years. She taught both
English and Social Studies in grades 7-12. The last 13 years of her career
were spent teaching 8th grade social studies at Emporia Middle School.
While at the middle school, Dr. Mallein was recognized as a 1997 Kansas
Master Teacher, 1998 Kansas Teacher of the Year, and a finalist for 1998
National Teacher of the Year. She currently conducts workshops on the
multiple intelligences and brain-based research activities and hands-on
activities for the social studies classroom. Dr. Mallein is active in the
Kansas Council for the Social Studies and maintains memberships in PDK,
ATE, NCSS, and ASCD.
