Family tree holds a nest of Hornets
Finding a family enjoying an ESU football game isn’t unusual, but at Emporia State University's Family Day, a special group watched the ESU vs. Fort Hays State contest this fall. The McGee-Hoffmans family was recognized at halftime as the 2006 Hornet Heritage award winner.
In its sixth year, the Hornet Heritage award celebrates families who have multiple generations of ESU graduates in the clan. The McGees and Hoffmans are no exception. Twenty-one members of the families spanning four generations have either attended or graduated from ESU. The matriarchs are Mary (Wilson) McGee, a former student; and Marguerite (Gorman) Hoffmans, who earned an education degree in 1960.
Five of McGee’s children and two of Hoffmans’ children became the second generation of Hornets in the 1950s and 1960s. The families were linked together when Nancy (McGee) Hoffmans married Carl Hoffmans. Nancy nominated the two families for the 2006 award.
The second generation includes Garth McGee (FS); Lyman McGee (BSB 1963) and his wife Kathleen (Unruh) McGee (BSE 1963); David McGee (BSB 1970) and his wife Marcia (Dillingham) McGee (FS 1969); Bridget (Sangster) McGee (BSE 1980) who married Lyndol McGee; Nancy (McGee) Hoffmans (FS 1957) and her husband Carl Hoffmans (BSB 1955); Ann (Hoffmans) Pyle (BSE 1956) and her husband Reginald “Fritz” Pyle (BSE 1950).
The third generation includes Pam (McGee) Frederickson (FS) and Julie (McGee) Baker (FS); Mark McGee (FS); Kevin Hoffmans (BSB 1984) and his wife Jennifer (Phillips) Hoffmans (BSB 1987; Andrew Hoffmans (BSB 1983) and his wife Amy (Mudge) Hoffmans (BSB 1984); and David Hoffmans (BSB 1987). Alone in the fourth generation is Dallin Frederickson (FS), the child of Pam (McGee) Frederickson.
