Trying to keep up
As a high-schooler, I chuckled when a friend assured me he was smarter from all the video games he'd played. Surely not, I thought.
I never had videogames as a youngster, although I longed for them. Today, my electronic know-how suffers while my high-school friend is probably doing OK. When it's time to change the VCR's clock or record my favorite sitcom, I either don't do it or ask my wife for help.
In terms of age, I'd qualify as a "digital native" - but I'm really a "digital immigrant," as author and game-based learning proponent Marc Prensky writes. I use technology with an accent and yearn for the old country. Every technological task - learning to manage this website's content, for instance - calls for mastering a new trick. At times it's easy, and other times I doubt an old dog can learn new tricks. Try and try again, right?
